“Where am I? Who am I? - What - am I?”

The sword sung sweet nothing’s through the air scattering blood in its wake.

“These questions haunt my footsteps while I wander through this world of smoke and mirrors.”

He was lightning on a breath of air, the thunderclap held in a moment. An insect about to be swatted out. Less than nothing.

“Pathetic. Little whisps to brush aside.”

Blood swept in the blade’s wake. It always came back to here, the sweet dependable memory of steel on flesh. The only trade he’d ever really been good at.

“Back beast, your tricks –”

Strange to be so calm with his life slipping away from him in little red slithers, warm against his skin.

“What should I say? You're in my way? Please step aside? Leave?”

A twist of the wrist, a turn of the waist. Clever little tricks learnt a lifetime and half the world ago tearing life and flesh assunder.

“When you harm someone they remember it.”

That strange inner monologue voiced against a metallic tang of darkness.

“They never forget - memory and flesh is all people are.”

Such a transparent thing his life seemed, the sword clattered to the floor.

“They never forget.”

Rain slashed against his face, a clean counterpoint to the carnage around him. The storm raged on unabated.

well, Nem, I have to say, I love it! I've read it four times, and still have yet to decipher it. It's beautiful, and confusing, and chaotic, and breath-taking. If I understood, I fear I wouldn't appreciate(spelling?) your work as much....though. You have my applause.
