The world narrowed down as the wyvern closed, taking on a greater sense of reality. Chill mist seemed to form a tunnel down the length of the ship among the rigging and the wind. Peter felt his hands producing blades from their hidden sheaths, clever fingers practicing their little magic trick to summon or banish death too fast for the eye to follow. He strove against the two wyvern striking them with memories of unbearable agony and visions of empty darkness from his presence as he darted towards them. One went down crashing into the deck, a distant part of his mind registered confusion while another moved his foot and tensed muscles, automatically propelling the dagger in his offhand the short distance required to slam into the creature’s head.

"Wyvern meat for tea then." A voice that wasn't his own commented. Peter didn't check whether the blade had struck true, only dead things stayed still for long in a fight.

He was down a knife but it was better than a flailing wyvern setting the ship aflame. The remaining wyvern seemed somewhat less eager to engage, whether because it remembered the fire lanced agony and blindness of coming near him or simply because its partner had just died he wasn’t sure. Peter darted across the deck towards the creature, teeth bared and a harsh bellow on his lips, ready to roll to the side as he passed or should it try to burn him.

Lyla slid down the ratlines as fast as she could, but not quite fast enough. Before she was even halfway down, two wyverns broke away from the rest of the flock? pack? to circle menacingly around her.

"Oops," she muttered, thinking it hadn't been her most brilliant idea to start climbing down and thus present a vulnerable target clinging to the ratlines. Suddenly, one of the wyverns voiced a squawk and crashed to the deck below, writhing. The other wyvern jerked back to avoid being hit by his falling comrade, giving her time to grab out one of the two throwing stars she had pocketed before going to the navigation room.

Even if making sure you always have weapons on you before you go somewhere was all the city taught me, it was worth it. Lyla thought inwardly.

WHOOSH!

The remaining wyvern had let loose a torrent of flames, narrowly missing Lyla and burning the ratlines below her. Things just got a lot more complicated. Her mind raced. She would either have to climb back to the crow's nest, or get down to the deck from here. Neither appealed to her.

The wyvern was swooping for a second pass as she thought. In a split second, Lyla made her decision. Gripping a throwing star tightly, she waited for just the right moment... and threw.

Her aim was off. Just by an inch. Instead of lodging in the eye socket, as she had planned, her throwing star stuck fast in the tissue around the eye, sending the wyvern, crazed with pain, careening straight towards her.

Lyla didn't stop to think. With a whoop of exhilaration, she launched herself into midair and landed with a thump on the wyverns back, her weight sending the lizard crashing down towards the deck. As the two fell, intertwined, she gritted her teeth and slashed down with her other throwing star.

With its sharp edges all the way around, the throwing star was ill-equipped for stabbing and cut her palm as she dug it into the wyvern's flesh. She would have some minor cuts from the throwing star, but it was better than being fried.

Gregory's wooden rod connected soundly with the wyvern's skull; however, the dragon's velocity was such that though its head was knocked out of the way, the body followed. Gregory was caught by a muscular tail and knocked to the ground, breath taken away--however, the wyvern was currently incapacitated. Stars swirled around its head. If Gregory recovered from his fall, he could dump the thing overboard.

Lycoris' attack was similarly successful; her shield knocked the wyvern completely off-course, sending it to the ground. Her lash with the rapier didn't fatally wound it like she intended, but it did cut off some important tendons and ligaments on its right wing. It gave a piercing scream as it crashed into the deck, temporarily blinded by pain. Its tail was thrashing wildly, coming dangerously close to Tristan; Greg and Ly would need to either move the captain or put the thing out of commission. This would be hard to do, however, since its wing was also flapping about. They would only have seconds until it recovered enough to fight again.

Nahwaqde's hooves connected with a loud crack; he had hit the beast's breastbone and wing. It spiraled off the centaur and connected with the cabin, shattering every window on that wall. This wyvern was made of sterner stuff, though; its head immediately whipped around and delivered an near-miss of scorching flames to Nahwaqde's left flank. A couple hairs would catch on fire and the centaur would be tender on that side for the next couple days--but other than that, he had emerged unscathed. The wyvern, however, was grounded and its left wing draped down at an awkward angle; because of its difficulty in breathing now, it probably couldn't fire another jet.

Lyla's attack missed, unfortunately; the wind buffeting the ratlines skewed her throw. Fortunately, this made it harder on the wyvern to catch a moving target. The thing let out another torrent of flame, once again catching the ratlines beneath her. Going down was no longer an option; though the wind quickly blew out any flames that might have caught, it was enough to weaken the ratlines to a point where they wouldn't be climbable. Lyla would be forced to go up to the nest. The emergency rope was still up there and could be used as either a weapon or a way to get down. Attached to one side of the rope was a long, heavy brick--surely it would crush hollow bones... Whatever Lyla decided, she would need to get up and decide soon because the wyvern was making its way back--and unlike the ratlines, the nest didn't move.

Alia's screams would go unheard by the wyvern above. Luckily for her, Peter's knife successfully killed the thing before the wyvern on deck had a chance to orient on her. However, there were others of the crew she could help...

Peter's wyvern would circle him cautiously before feinting to the right and striking out, teeth bared to the left. If the wyvern missed, its path would continue straight to Alia, who was paying attention to the wyvern above; even if Peter killed it, its dead body would barrel into the girl. Peter would have to either change the dragon's course or hope that Alia saw it in time.

Tristan's vision snapped back when Peter killed the wyvern, making him disoriented; he stepped back to catch his balance. He'd be unaware of the tail snapping dangerously close to him, however...

Nawahqde flinched as a jet of flame shot part him and singed the hair along his flank.

"Arrgh... Just you wait..."

Driven by his anger, he closed in on the fallen beast to grab it by the throat.

"I will teach you to spit flames on me..."

((assuming he manages to get some sort of choke hold on the wyvern:))

With one hand clawing at the wyvern's neck - both to prevent further firebursts and to keep the beast's sharp teeth away from him - Nawahqde searched for a good spot to get a solid hold with his other hand, Lift the stricken creature off the deck and throw it over the side of the ship.

"Let us see how well you can fly with one wing..."

Lycoris ducked back for a moment, wary of the wyvern's tail thrashing about. What did it take to end these beasts? She couldn't afford to get knocked over board, and neither could any of the others... Getting back on board would certainly be a problem, if nothing else.

Speaking of which, she was aware of Tristan tottering in the corner of her eye. Didn't he see the great big giant honking wyvern that was rolling about? He seemed to be out of it; this couldn't be good. She tried to side step out of the way of the thrashing tail, and grabbed the Captain by the arm, yanking him over to stand behind her. At least this way he'd be out of the line of fire. And possibly bad puns too.

As soon as she thought that Tristan had been pulled back out of harm's way, she side-stepped again, trying to avoid the tail's path. Then she charged the wyvern, moving to strike its chest and hopefully kill the beast.

Peter didn't notice Alia's potential plight, there wasn't room in the world right then for other people, either you could save yourself or you'd get your friends killed later on. Liabilities were better off dead. He shifted his weight into the path of the Wyvern's apparent path of travel and swept his nearside foot around in a shallow arc as it feinted, completing the other half of the circle, closing the distance between himself and the hurtling creature. His knife came up from his waist as he turned, a slender metal talon seeking the thing's neck.

A gigantic grin spread across Gregory's face as the shelaighleigh cracked the wyvern right in the skull. For a moment, he thought he'd even managed to kill the thing in one blow. Wouldn't mum be proud?! he managed to think, before the tail swung around and crashed into his chest.

He landed on his back, hard, and instantly curled into a ball on the ground. Gripping the shelaighleigh tightly, he choked on the lack of air in his lungs and tried desperately to regain control of his own breathing. The world became a swirling mist of colors and vertigo, but that was fine by him. It wouldn't be the first time..

Rolling off of his arms and stretching his legs out, he tried to balance himself against the deck and the vertigo. Oh, you bloody well earned it now, he thought in the wyvern's direction. As he kept his momentum and moved forward onto his knees, he grasped the shelaighleigh around the neck and head.

Sliding his fingers along the underside of the head, he gripped the neck tightly and twisted. The wyvern's tail was gone now, and exposed it's head to him. Having no idea if he was going to recover from the blow to his chest, he struck with the hidden blade in the shelaighleigh.

A quick flash of steel glinted in the light visible from between clouds and smoke. His swing would bury half of the blade in the wyvern's head, if he managed to land it. In his own head, his chances were pretty good. Close-range, swing level across the chest for balance, and he'd already brained the thing once.

((To clarify, Gregory doesn't know if he just had the wind knocked out of him or if the wyvern crushed his ribcage. So, he's doing the "with my last breath I spit at the" deal. Razz))

Nawahqde was successful in tossing the wyvern overboard, but received three parallel gashes on his chest from the thing's kicking hind legs. The centaur was free to help the others.

Lycoris' stab would eventually be fatal, but the thing was still writhing in pain. She received a good smack on her thigh from the tail, which would likely leave a bruise. Otherwise, she would just need to be careful of a head that would try to bite her... Trapped as she was, (whipping tail behind her, body/wings to one side, and head in front of her,) she would need to finish this quickly. Thankfully, she had punctured a lung, so it didn't have the hot air behind it to summon its fire.

Peter's attack would also be successful. The wyvern would be dead, but its mass hurtled toward Alia. She would be pinned to the mast by the dragon's weight, the wind knocked out of her.

The other wyvern, seeing easier prey, circled slowly down, a bit wary of Peter, whose back was towards it. It took the opportunity to shoot a stream of fire at its adversary; hopefully Peter would see it in time...

The stars circling the wyvern's head knocked the blade off its course. Instead, it buried itself within the thick neck scales; jerking the wyvern back to reality, (the stars making haste back to the heavens in fear of the dragon,) the thing jerked itself away, taking the blade with it. Thankfully, it was still within striking distance of the wooden sheath/rod.

Tristan supported himself with the railing, taking in his crew. He saw Lyla stuck on the nest and Alia pinned to the mast. He didn't relish being that disoriented in the near future, (and he was slightly nauseous from it,) he took out his chain whip and joined the fray. He saw Lycoris somewhat trapped by the creature and Gregory's sword gone. Deciding that Lycoris was in more immediate danger, Tristan lashed out with his whip. He caught the creature's tail; while it was by no means no longer a threat, it gave Lycoris a bit more room to maneuver for the killing stroke.

Nawahqde winced as the wyvern's hind claw drew a set of long gashes along his chest. But that would have been this critters last attack on anyone. He spend a second watching the crippled dragon-thing as it dropped away into the depth below the ship.

Pulling himself back into the real world, Nawahqde looked around to see if any of his crewmates needed assistance. He found Gregory locked in close combat with one of the wyverns. Momentarily, the beast was retreating from the cook, with what looked like some kind of weapon sticking in its neck. But Gregory didn't look too good either, and obviously the wyvern had taken his weapon with it.

The good news was that the wyvern was currently staying on the ground. The centaur approached the wounded critter from the rear and raised his forelegs to stomp down on it.

"Why won't this Abyss-cursed beast just roll over into the ocean already?" Lycoris growled aloud.

Though it had been a close call, the wyvern had yet to use it's fiery breath again, something she found strange... But it's tail was lashing about behind her, and could easily knock her off of the ship and give her an impromtu sky-diving lesson.

She heard a crack behind her* and glanced back - it looked like Tristan was getting a hold on himself and rejoining the fray. Well, about blinking time too.

Deciding to go in for a more dangerous gambit, Lycors ducked slightly before cutting upwards and towards the wyvern's neck, hoping to sever its equivalent jugular if not its head. It wasn't pleasant, but someone had try to to put the creature down quick sharp.

((I'm assuming she'd be able to hear the whip crack when Tristan attacks? Tell me if I'm wrong))

The second wyvern smacked into the deck leaving a long bloody smear before pinning the girl to the mast. Peter kept moving, a blast of fire struck the arm of his jacket and he rolled across it to put it out before circling back to his feet. The creature that had burned his jacket seemed to be closing on the trapped girl. Fear seemed to have conspired with the creature, making it slow, still there didn’t seem much reason that the thing couldn’t stand off and flame at them all day, or just roast the girl alive. He moved forward, retrieving his other knife from the first dragon, if he was going to avoid a stint treating burns as well as compression wounds he’d have to be fast. In three swift movements he cut one end of a length of rope free from the winding, leaving the other still secured to the ship, formed a loop in the end and secured one of his knives to it for weight. Peter advanced on the creature spinning the weapon at his side then sent it arching over and up hoping to foul one of the things wings or harpoon it with the knife.

Gregory's fingers tightened momentarily around the hilt of his blade, but he was unable to keep a grip on it. He was also none too keen on staying so close to a scaly, bladed, fire-breathing monstrosity of nature... so he let it get it's position while he took his.

Breathing was coming more easily to him now, and he had enough strength (and probably some to spare) to take another swing at the scaly. Swapping hands, to place the sheath in his good hand, he took one step in toward the beast. His foot planted on the deck, and he used his momentum to bring himself in closer. Coiling up his body tightly, he cocked the stick back over his shoulder.

"Let's see if we can teach ya some new tricks, yeah? Let's knock your brains about and tell ye' to fetch yer senses!" he called out, needing to present the battle-cry as always. Among the final words, he swung the sheath like a baseball bat, still aiming for the creature's head.

Nawahqde's hooves connected solidly with the wyvern's back; everybody in the immediate vicinity would hear a loud CRACK as the thing's hind legs crumpled underneath it. It gave a loud squeal before curling into a fetal position (as best as it could, given that the lower half couldn't curl in) and lay still. Gregory's swing cracked it spot on its head, knocking it unconscious. It was, however, still very much alive, but no longer a threat.

Lycoris' attack was also successful, driving her blade straight into the beast's brain. The entire body spasmed before going still.

Peter's makeshift weapon gave the wyvern the opening it needed; it shot forward just as he threw the weapon. The knife went through the thin membrane of the wing, not only fouling it, but tangling it with the rope. It shot another stream of fire, this time at the rope; it seemed to be unusually smart.

Alia would possibly be able to wriggle out from behind the wyvern and jump back in the fray.

Peter smiled and began to turn the winding mechanism to tear the Wyvern from the sky. Even if it managed to burn through the rope he doubted it could do so before it was smashed into the cold hard deck. Once it was down it would be a matter of teeth and metal fangs against wing and tail. Peter flashed teeth at the creature and turned harder. The mist would have wetted the rope, a heavy thing by itself from its use with the sails and with one wing fouled the wyvern had to be in pain.

“Come on, beast, Old Painless is waitin’.”

Lycoris stepped back from the beast's carcass and whipped out her cutlass, in order to shake off the blood. They'd have to clean up this mess once they'd secured the ship again... She sighed and shook her head as she realised her tunic and trousers were spotted with the wyvern's blood, and re-sheathed her cutlass.

Not that she was prissy about these things, being a pirate and all, but the quiet life had forced a certain level of fastidiousness, considering that she hadn't properly partaken in piracy in some time.

She surveyed what was going on around her - Tristan had been a bit disorientated earlier during the fight, and she was confident that Gregory was holding his own for now. Lycoris marched up tp Tristan, and put a hand on his arm.

"Captain, are you quite recovered? I need to check ensure the rest of the crew are holding their own, but you seemed out of it a moment ago..."
