Taking five this time.

For those that don't know what the writer's group is, it's a group that (used to) meet every month. People sign up, then I'll give them a topic; once the topic is released, you'll have roughly one month to complete a short piece on that subject or in that style that is given. At the end, we vote on who we feel wrote the best while pertaining to the topic.
Ready? Set? GO! _________________ Keeper of Zaebos' and Jormand's powers.

I am willing to drop out of my spot if anyone else wants in. No problem, I will only enter if the 5th spot cannot be filled. _________________ "He gave you a life and you should cherish that treasure." - Benny

The theme is ostranenie, or defamiliarization! You task in this group is to force the audience to see something common in a strange or unfamiliar way. This technique forces you to alter the audience's perception of a concept, (often simple,) and look at it in complex or unfamiliar terms.
Some of the best examples come from science fiction and Russian literature. For example, Tolstoy wrote a story where the narrator was a horse and everything was told from the horse's point of view. Ostranenie can include the use of foreign language. This technique is most often used in poetry and plays, but it is often used in prose as well.
If it helps, Wordsworth's work in general is a good example. Also, Samuel Coleridge defined it like this: "To carry on the feelings of childhood into the powers of manhood; to combine the child’s sense of wonder and novelty with the appearances which every day for perhaps forty years had rendered familiar [. . .] this is the character and privilege of genius."
We'll have this due by January 31. _________________ Keeper of Zaebos' and Jormand's powers.

In a stroke of brilliant irony, I was just talking about some excellent examples of this very thing to a fellow reader at work! Science fiction, indeed, is an exceptional place to find this sort of thing. Read "Eternity Road" by Jack McDevitt, he uses this several times to GREAT effect.
Now then, what to write... _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

Or... anything from the Twilight Zone.
My original idea won't work, so on to the phase of spontaneous generation! _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^
