I just got back not too long ago from a beat slam poetry reading.
About a ten minute walk from my apartment. At the outdoor theater right on Old Main Hill.
Made a new friend, but he's probably forgotten about me by now, merely some particles that existed. Nothing more than an exchange of names and a discussion of our love for Anis Mojgani's way of stitching together seemingly unrelated words into families.
We spoke of music and wondered about the dragon fly that kept close to everyone's head. The high speed flutter of it's wings triggered stiff necks into whip lashing from this side.
No.
To the other side, looking for a friend, lover, or a new enemy.
We spoke about the places that where we tortured those with many appendages. Our lips and teeth formed our secrets and sent them through the air by leave of our tongue.
The large ball of light was losing it's battle in the sky and it stained the heavens red with it's effort. The trees were living for us. They lived for us all. Not just for the squirrel that made it's home inside of it's cockles. They lived for the everlasting gasp that God released into man.
They lived for us. They lived deep. They lived knowing. They lived for us. They lived for us that we might understand the deep cuts that we instilled into them. They lived for us knowing that we aimed for their death. Never did they question.
I asked questions when I was young about how the blood was pumping. I asked the questions of my mother who was the keeper of finite knowledge.
I asked where the kola bears were and how long their claws were. I asked if I could keep more than one God in my heart and nurse them all.
I searched deep down, down into the inner wiring of the synapses and highways of my brain mass. Wondering, what would Bill Nye say? Wondering was all that was left.
Wonder.
I said it slow.
Whun. Dur.
Whun. It seeped out of me until it deprived my lungs of oxygen and I begged for more, not for fear of death, but for fear of never using words again.
Dur. I repeated it, until the enamel flaked from my teeth and pain unhinged my jaw, screaming for a replacement of joints.
Whun. Dur.
I need that still.
The Whun.
And the Dur.
I need the feeling of being held close at night. At night when I wear the streamed black rivers and forget the mechanics of my lungs.
I need the arms that disappeared in the crack of the door. I need the being.
Being is just a word.
And so, for now, they teach me things.
They teach me how I must let the words run through every strand of hair.
Every strand. They must run through the hair that covers my hands.
The words must exist down to the dirt under my nails.
They teach. They lived and they taught. But no one listened.
They listened for us though.
They listened until they were consumed by all the ears they grew.
They still listen only now.
They listen for all my Gods now.
They listen for the electricity and for the firebugs.
They listen until it bleeds them dry.
I was only 3 when I began listening. _________________ I can't remember....oh *le sigh* |

I haven't checked them out yet but if they are better than you I am already impressed. I don't read lots of poetry but your 'Whun Dur' poem is amazing. Seriously one of my favorite poems ever. _________________ ~Durtan, the previously un-dubbed keeper of squiggles~
