It had been a week or two since the Order of the Anima had stormed the main offices of Williams Media, and Team Alpha had been using the time to let their wounds heal and train up. In that time, the models had been taken to the Sisters of Mercy and subsequently moved on to pastures unknown to the field teams.

Ben, their driver from that mission had been holed up with Sisters of Mercy again, recovering from his beating. He'd broken a couple of ribs and nearly ended up in critical condition, and he hadn't been talking much either, something which had worried Anton. Tonight would be the first night that he'd be allowed visitors since then.

Anton had called the group in for a check-up. Garrick had been insisting that they go a reconnsaisance mission, but there were things that needed to be discussed and sorted out first.

So Team Alpha were at the stronghold of the Sisters of Mercy - where Dean, Nate, Anton and Ellie were based, and where Dawson had undergone most of his initial training. It was within walking distance of the place they needed to scope out that evening, and Garrick had wanted to have a very quick meeting to discern what had happened during the last mission.

As Team Alpha entered the old airy garage, Dean would stride up to meet them smiling, followed at his heels by a very large and slobbery Olde English sheepdog known as Roland to all who knew him. Roland would insist on barking and running rings around Team Alpha until he was satisified.

"It's been too long!" Dean called out, allowing his friends to greet him as they would. "I'm glad you guys are okay..."

Team Alpha had a variety of choices: they could talk with Dean; they could follow Garrick straight to the meeting room, where Nate would be sitting and engage in conversation with either of them; or if they had been badly injured, they could go down to the infirmary to see Anton... or sneak in to speak with Ben!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Jae Kim hung back from the meeting and greeting with Dean. Not that she wanted to be rude or anything like that, because she liked Dean well enough, but she wasn't so keen on Roland and had rather a hard time hiding it from the rest of her teammates. She could never quite understand why people found an animal that was so blundering and slobbering so endearing.

Bleurgh.

Quietly, she skipped around the welcoming party and headed straight for the infirmary. Not that she had been so badly injured last time, but she had gotten a lecture about combat and open woundsfrom Garrick and Nate, so she thought it safe to cover her bases. Anton had mentioned that he wanted to make sure there was no scarring or infection anyways.

Jae Kim headed through the building and downstairs to the basement, where the infirmary was, knocking on the door of the little office beside it.

"Yo, Anton, you about?"

((Give yourselves an intro post and get stuck in - we'll be on our way soon. Very Happy ))

Niamh walked into the entry wearing her customary black cargos, tank top, and hoody. Her hair in a 'new' style of tiny crazy curly spikey buns that were arranged in swirly patterns on her head.

Niamh smiled widely at Dean, "Heyo Dean. It certainly has been a long time no see." Niamh lightly punched Dean in the shoulder before being bowled over by Roland.

Niamh laughed out loud at the dogs antics, "Heyo to you too Rolly-polly, you old blighter..." Niamh ruffled the fluff on Roland's face while as she continued to talk meaningless dog talk to the pooch. She'd missed animals since she'd moved to the U.S. There had been plenty of animals on her parents farm and she missed them all dearly. Lucky for her the neighbours were look in on the gang.

Niamh pushed Roland away, righted herself and winked at Dean, "So you been getting into any mischief with the Sisters of Mercy?"

Barrett walked in at the back of the group and let the door shut behind him. He nodded to Dean, but the man seemed engaged and didn't seem to notice. He took a minute to wrestle with Roland- Barrett was a great fan of animals, especially dogs. Anything friendly and loyal was a good pal in his book. He tended to prefer smaller, less messy types, but as long as Roland wasn't his to look after, he was a great pooch. Having made his greetings, Barrett passed on through to Garrick's room where a meeting would hopefully begin.

Diarmuid was sore still. He was beginning to feel his age, wounds and bruises, particularly the deep bruises he'd picked up in the last mission, healed more slowly, and he walked somewhat gingerly due to the large bruise on his behind from his ill-advised leap off a stairwell.

He had decided before the he owed Ben a visit. He wound his weary way to the infirmary. He hoped to avoid Anton and make his way into Ben's room.

Carl felt like an intruder; the garage had the empty air of a mausoleum to it such that movement and sound were a blasphemy in its static embrace. Sharp edges of sound tore the silence apart, sending it skittering away to hide in the shadows and corners of the garage. Somewhere a dog was barking.

‘Cerberus,’ he thought. The guardian to the underworld. What does that make us? The question went unanswered as the dog did its best to appear all around them at the same time.

“Hello, Roland. Hi, Dean.” Carl paused, a terrible thought occurring to him. “Got any coffee around here? Can’t have a meeting without coffee.”

Dawson shuffled himself into the meeting room with all the confidence of a henpecked librarian. He carried with him the newest edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, tucked neatly under his arm. Today he wore a simple, brown, turtle-neck sweater and navy slacks. Sliding in to place himself to the side of the meeting, he turned a hand for the dog as it passed. With a small smile, he gave the ruffian's hair a good tussle before it got out of range, then watched it go. His attention drifted between the joyous dog and the other voices in the room, and he adjusted his glasses absently while waiting.

"Hey, Dean!" Jaze called, rushing up to hug him. "Oof," he said, wincing and loosening his normally tight grip; his ribs were still sore and a little bruised from Williams Media.

"I hope everybody's okay," Dean said, worried.

"We're perfect," Jaze replied.

Roland ran about him, slobbering everywhere. Jaze broke the embrace with Dean and crouched down to catch the dog, hug him, and give him a big kiss on the nose.

"How are you, boy?" Jaze said, grinning widely. He missed his own dog back in Thailand (who was, no doubt, running in the streets by now), so he relished the chance to play with another furry companion.

Jaze was worried about Ben, but he had to get through the pleasantries first. He wanted to see the cute driver again and make sure he was okay.

((Sorry it took so long to get this post up - exam season started not long after I handed the old dissertation in, so the posts might be short and sweet before I can get my head in the game))

Roland, apparently satisfied with this level of attention and ruffling for the mean time, gave a quick bark and started to gallop in circles round the group, tongue lolling.

Dean accepted his hugs and shoulder punches with grace, laughing and returning them where appropriate.

"Ah coffee? There's probably some in the kitchen, though you might have to fight Ellie for it. Well, so long as you guys are healing up. It was a close call, getting those kids out, you know? We were all in a bad way. Especially after those other guys showed up... Let's move this towards the meeting room, tell me what you guys have been doing since we last met.

"Hey, where's Nate? NATE!! Come on, say hi, we've got guests," Dean called out, as he started to move towards the Sisters of Mercy's meeting room.

The request would be met with a yelp of pain and a great deal of loud, virulent swearing. A tall man with dark blond hair, the same man that had assisted in the rescue, would emerge from one of the workshops on the far side of the garage, nursing a hand wrapped in a cloth and looking none to pleased. Nate stalked over in the group's direction.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

For those who darted on ahead, the meeting room was more like a break room. There was a long metal coffee table down the middle of the room, and the walls were lined with a few sofas and assorted mismatching bean bags.

Garrick would already be there, shuffling through his papers - early arrivals could feel free to question him.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

For those seeking coffee, they would find it in the kitchen, which seemed to be the cleanest place in the garage. It was all shiny tiles and squeaky linoleum.

They would also find Ellie there, making coffee with several jugs being prepared at the same time. She would have deep circles under her eyes, so it was clear that she had been on a coffee burn for a while.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Diarmuid would by pass Anton this time. As he entered the make shift ward that the Sisters of Mercy had set up, he would see that one bed at the far end had its curtains partially closed over. He would just be able to make out Ben's form.

If he approached closer, he would see that the younger man was looking rather haggard and staring into space. Ben wouldn't notice Diarmuid unless he moved closer and came into his line of vision.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Anton was in his office slash treatment room. He was one of the older members of the Anima, older than Garrick or Diarmuid. He had dark hair that was starting to get a bit long, with white wings creeping in, and was very tall, dressed in simple shirt, slacks and a white lab coat.

He looked up from his computer, and nodded towards Jae Kim, taking off glasses that had been perched on his nose.

"So it's you, is it? Come in come in, I assume this is about your injuries, yes? Take a seat and shift your shirt, and I'll check them," Anton said, waving his hand in indication. "Come along now, we don't have all day, child."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Jae Kim turned slightly red in the face, but did as Anton bid. She knew it was all for medical purposes, but she hated being poked and prodded by doctors.

Hopping up on the medical bench ((I have no idea what these things are called)), Jae Kim hiked up the back of her shirt so the doctor could check her cuts.

"They're okay now... right? I can go on missions and stuff, can't I?"

’Coffeeeeee’ a small voice whispered.

Dang, did I say that aloud?

Carl clapped Dean on the shoulder in a manly fashion and followed the smell of black gold. The mistress of the pot stood over her bubbling concoction, dark rings a sign of her office.

“Hi Ellie.” He fetched a mug and poured himself some wakefulness. The bitter substance lent a brittle edge to the world, as if he could reach out and snap chunks off it. He didn’t ask the obvious questions, how her week had been, whether it was a late night. Bad, and yes; the answers were obvious, the questions little more than insulting nonsense.

It had been a rough time since the raid. It always was, coming down off that knife edge of violence. It was luck and chaos, trusting your body knew the moves, that your mind was ugly enough to take the openings; morality became nothing more than a hollow word for holy men and beggars. The world seemed to run past in bursts of colour and speed; grabbed at by quicksilver thoughts. It was hard to fit himself back into the mindset of the tamed monkey.

He wanted something to take the edge off, and chances were so did she. The problem of never sleeping wasn’t the dreams you missed out on, it was that you were never really awake. That was the strange dualism of coffee; it took the edge off the world by letting you keep it sharp for too long. Like a keen blade blunted against paper.

Or maybe she was just running tired, living day to day and hoping to live a little longer; maybe she had some problem that was desperately important to solve. Any of them could have been her mistake. He’d seen enough people burn out by now to take any of half a dozen guesses, most of which he’d wager were wrong.

He took another pull on the coffee, “Want a hand?”

Diarmuid limped gently down the ward - it was mostly empty, which he found gratifying. It was never a good sign when it was full. But he'd seen Ben's bed near the far end, and everything else melted away to some extent.

He speeded up as much as he could, and gently pushed aside the curtain. Seeing Ben was... he was normally so lively, so handsome, but no longer. Ben looked thin and drained, sitting up and staring somewhat blankly. He didn't seem to notice when Dia came in.

Dia moved to the end of the bed and gently cleared his throat. "Ben? How are you, chum?"

Niamh nodded at Dean's comment, as she walked towards the meeting room, and started to reply to his comment but paused at the sound of the commotion in the garage. Turning she saw someone that looked familiar and whom she assumed was Nate given the timing of his appearance walk into the garage.

Niamh turned and called out to him, as she nodded towards his hand, "You all right man? That was a colourful bit o cursin' goin' on there."

Jaze jumped at Roland's bark, but smiled as the dog ran around, tongue lolling.

Intent on seeing Ben, Jaze reasoned that Anton would need to get through the others first. He could also met Nate later.

Jaze snuck off towards Ben's bed, but paused when he saw Jae and Anton sitting there.

"Well crap," he murmured. He decided to just walk through there quickly and reach Ben's bed--where it seemed Dia had already gotten to. Pausing, he decided it'd be best to head back to the others and meet Nate after all.

Jaze headed towards the meeting room and sat down on a plush bean bag chair. He smiled and waved to Garrick, unsure if the man would actually see him as embroiled as he was in the papers.

Dawson looked up as Jaze entered the meeting room, offering a thin smile that looked rather practiced. He gave a small wave, then decided to sneak over as quietly as he could. Moving with as much speed and agility he could muster, he kicked the legs of a few chairs lightly on his way over. Finally reaching his destination, he settled into place near Jaze's seat.

"Hey there, I'm Dawson," he said while extending his hand and holding the smile in place. "I was with the extraction team, but in the chaos I didn't really get a chance to get to know anyone."

Overall he seemed nervous, bookish without a lot of confidence. He had keen, rarely blinking eyes that seemed to focus with an almost fierce clarity. The dark circles hanging under them, when combined with the lack of color in his cheeks, didn't do much for the rest of his face.

((Sorry if this is a weak post, but I need to get the proverbial ball rolling again))

Nate gave Dean a good glarin' before he turned his attention to Niamh's question. He shrugged manfully, or at least as much as he could while clutching one hand with an old tea towel.

"Being weapons guy and all, I was working with some delicate equipment. Which pretty boy over there knows is some very sharp stuff, and I'm never to be surprised under any circumstances," He grumbled.

Dean would wince as he saw his teammate's wound, and hold open the meeting room door for them: "I'm sorry man, I forgot. I thought you knew we had stuff on tonight."

"Sorry does not polish highly illegal antique blades, Dean," Nate grumbled, before turning back to Team Alpha. "So what have you guys been doing anyway? We ain't seen ya in ages, stuff been rough back on the farm or summin?"

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Once he had had enough of poking and prodding Jae Kim's recently healed wounds, Anton snapped off his medical gloves and stepped back, indicating that it was okay for her to hop off of the table and de-hike her shirt.

"There is no sign of infection, and certainly no... contamination. I judge you safe for duty this evening," he said, returning to his work. "Now run along, you have a meeting now, yes? Shouldn't keep the rest of your team waiting."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Jae Kim just de-hiked the back of her t-shirt and nodded. She wasn't quite sure of what else to say really. The health checks made her nervous, not least because of the possibility of 'contamination'. They did okay for a secret underground force, but if someone got seriously sick, then it could get bad.

"S-sure thing, Doc... I'll see you later then," she mumbled before scarpering back upstairs to the meeting room.

"Hey guys, did I miss anything?"

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Ben moved round slowly, and gave Diarmuid a watery smile. There was still a lot of bruising visible on his face and arms. It was possible that his fugue state was being caused by whatever painkillers Anton had described him, but there was something reserved about him.

"Uh... Hi there. Didn't expect... You didn't have to come all the way down here you know.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Ellie handed Carl one of the carafes that had already been prepared.

"Here, take that in with you, we're gonna need it tonight. It's been mayhem round here cos Garrick has me trying to rebuild the old infrastructures based on what we've managed to salvage... it's been heavy-going though.

"You recovered from the last run?"

Carl juggled the carafe and his coffee, alternating sips from one with top-ups from the other while he thought.

The Beast, Draco, It; all the names man had given the more predatory side of their being lurked underneath like a serpent in a lake. Coils rippled through the surface as he thought; working out how to kill, where to run to, whispering sweet dreams of violence in his ears. It would take a long time to go back to sleep.

"Better." he said eventually. Aware it wasn't a good answer but that nothing else could be either.
