Well, with that established, I guarentee you I'm not a liberal. I'm probably more conservative.

Interesting anecdote to consider: in high school I had a history teacher who one day gave us each a handout with the 8 largest American political parties (betcha didn't know there were that many in the first place! ) and their basic stances on important issues. The catch was that they were labeled A, B, C and so on, rather than their actual names. We were told to choose which party we feel we most relate to, based on the stances listed for each, and after the exercise was done she collected our choices, told us which parties were which, and wrote up on the board the tally of how many people chose each party. In the end out of 45 kids there was only one Democrat and one Republican, everyone else chose other parties (go figure, I was the Democrat XD)
What I took away from that is the importance of social context. If we had been told which parties were which, I believe the numbers would have been vastly different, that a lot of kids wouldn't have wanted to be associated with some "weird independent" party, since the accepted opinion is that only the two largest parties even matter in the first place. When you take away the context people tend to actually think for themselves. But how often does that happen, outside of the classroom?
Also Tenshi, how old are you that you're entitled to shake your cane at the youngin's? _________________ I do commissions!

Sunny: Probably younger than you are to be honest. I just have a few more skeletons in my closet than the average person my age. For instance: I have a five year old child, a failed marriage, four digits of credit card debt, and gray hairs. The most troubling of all those is, of course, the gray hairs.

Sunshine, I love what you said about political parties. It's absolutely true, we are usually better represented by a party other than one of the main two. The problem is a lot of people feel their vote didn't count if they go third party, and in a way it doesn't. At least not to the degree a vote for a republican or democrat would.
Weighing the pros and cons of a two party system versus a many party system though, I do think a two party system is a good one. Granted, if we had had a two party system during the 1860 election, Abraham Lincoln probably would have never been present. Like so many issues with politics, I'm not sure there's a right or wrong option here. _________________ If you're reading this, you haven't quite made it to the next post. |

Hey sunny,.... I was wondering if you still had the paper work on that little in class project you did. If you do, could you run the experiment again for us here on this topic? I'd be interested in seeing how it turns out here. |

I believe there's the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, the Socialist Party...but I couldn't tell you the fourth. Independent Party, maybe? **shrug** Then you've got the two "big" parties, and that makes six.. _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

Sheesh I go away for few days and come back to a thread that's this long?
@Tenshi: I think... Socialist, Libertarian, Independent, Republican, Democrate, Green, Consitution, and... Peace and Freedom too I think?
I dont know if I can add much considering that a lot of things has already been said. I like both (democrate and republican) parties to a degree... Obama strikes me as inexperenced and McCain comes out as desperate for recuiting a inexperenced person for VP.
Palin is my Govenor, but I personally dont think she's ready to run for VP. She knows a lot about Alaska and how to mange it, but had to be coached by McCain's people. Up until couple of weeks ago, she didnt know what Bush Doctrine is and wasnt familiar with Forgein Policy. If you ask me, she looked unconfortable during her meeting with the Indian Prime Minister and Pakistian President. I found it kind of hilarious. _________________ Keeper of Gwendowlyn's red hair.
