It's just a test with one beam of protons to see that it accelerates everything properly but they're actually colliding some time in the new year. _________________ He who does not eat cheese will go mad. ~ French proverb.

Something about the creation of the universe. Don't know why they want to know about that unless it's going to yield a shiny new way of getting energy or faster computers or something down the line. _________________ Never forget,

I'm a bit disinterested actual, I don't understand a lot of it. . .and it just doesn't interest me. Horrid, I know. _________________ Keeper of Gaia and all the books on Earthsong

I'm excited that particle physics is going to have such an impressive set of tools to work with. I'm very excited that science is going to come so much closer to understanding it all. More than anything, I'm positively thrilled that we'll have the ability, as a race, to accelerate a particle to 99.9999999% of light speed. This will help us to be able to understand the whole Mass = Energy deal in more than just mathematics.
Well, I'm excited about it, anyway. I can't wait until they start publishing results. :>
In the back of my mind, there is perhaps a fear that something will go horribly wrong. At just under the speed of light, what's the potential energy release from these collisions? Are we looking at destroying a massive chunk of the planet? Mostly, these are entirely unfounded fears. The energy required to do that cannot be found in groups of seven particles per bunch, even with 2,808 bunches.
Most of what could happen would be damage to the LHC. It's burried far enough underground where I could see damage to the LHC, perhaps even collapsing the tunnel. I don't foresee any danger of massive explosions.

Lol Tin!
The LHC, if sucessful, will recreate the conditions present a few billionths of a second after the creation of the universe. This will answer many scientific and theological questions and may reveal the presence of the Higgs Boson (also known as the "God Particle") which gives every bit of matter in the universe mass. As you may know, this is big. It would provide information about the way the universe is structured and would set us on the path to working out the mass/energy discrepancy in the universe. Even if the Higss Boson is not forthcoming this tells us more than it doesn't and will lead to more research into life, the universe and everything.

I can't quite figure out why there's such a hype over the LHC and there was zero hype about all the other particle accelerators. But it's awesomesauce nonetheless. |
