The Tolkien Post
(Travelling through the countryside) Wink

Outside the gates of Calden Castle, lies Calden Town. Think of a typical "Large City" in a fantasy setting, but built out of steel and concrete, rather than wood and brick.

Beyond the town lies a lush rural countryside. It's mid-spring, so the fields are most likely freshly sown. Your trip is going to cover quite a distance, so the landscapes will change slightly over time: More or less forrested, fields, pastures, vinyards, greenhouses, the occasional farming homestead, small villages, etc.

Very large open spaces (including the bigger fields and patures) are likely to have wind generators on them. Rocky areas which are unsuited to any kind of agriculture are sometimes covered with solar panels.

Here's a (very rough) outline my idea of the geography of Myrandria and Patroponne. More details (such as the locations of the other PC's home counties) can be added in as we go.

The placement of the Vayne and Kleas Counties is based on Tenshi's comment that Davion would stay "to the east, closer to Vayne".

I included the County of Nūrande to signify that Kleas and Vayne do not share a border. There might also be a fourth border county east of Vayne.

As you move north, the terraing wil be getting more and more hilly and later rocky. The border between Myrandria and Patroponne (and indeed the entire southern border of Patroponne) is marked by a medium-height mountain range.

The distance between Calden City and the border is just over 300 miles. Keeping to the main roads and moving at a brisk overland speed, a Mecha could cover that distance in about 6 hours, but with the Patroponnese's varying speed and frequent pauses, you're more likely looking at 8-10 hours travel.

So I don't suppose there can be a desert anywhere in Vayne, can there? Oh, please let me have at least a little desert XD

Mecha fights in deserts appeal to me a great deal for some reason, I've never really known why. If I may request, badlands (desert) leading up to the mountains that separate the rest of Vayne from the Patroponnese border.

After I get home from work, I'll do up a diagram I had in mind for Vayne in Paint. Nothing fancy, but meh.

I envisioned most of the border region to look like this or this.

Of course, there could also be some places that look like this.

(In referrence to today's post about marching the Patroponnese to the border, and the Blyke's constant insults)

Anyone who is exceedingly knowledgeable in either Mercy's configuration or Davion's power conservation habits would likely note that his systems were still not at 100%, but were well above minimal operational thresholds. Anyone familiar with either (or especially both) Mercy or Davion would realize he was running with all weapons hot. And BTW, I severely doubt the Blykes would figure this out, as the only time they see Vayne forces are at full power, usually firing at them Wink

@Lope: I'll get cracking on a map of Vayne, mostly for my own uses, but also for your future GMing uses as well. Some thoughts on this have been left in a PM for your reading.

Since we're now getting closer to some action (not yet, but soon), I'd like everyone to put any relevant information pertaining to the technical status of their Mecha at the end of their posts in <chevrons>.

Such relevant information would be:

- Switching your ECM on or off.

- Using Improved Sensors.
These would be always active, but it helps if you remind me that you have them when you're activly searching for sensor contacts.

- Shooting Missiles.
Please note the number of Missiles Remaining / Total, like this:

<Devastator Missiles 1/2>

Spindrifter wrote:
When he reached the road to County Kleas, Jon kept his course toward Patroponne for a few more minutes, looking around for a suitable position. He found one within a few miles: a large rocky covert covered over by a sheet of solar panels. Taking advantage of his Mecha's short stature, he hunkered down beneath it and deactivated most of his systems, leaving only his ECM, sensors and comms package online. Monitoring passively, he hoped to wait until the escort passed by before breaking off back to Kleas. Provided that they seemed to be doing fine, (and that the escort had managed not to shoot the miserable lordling and both his guards out of sheer frustration) he'd simply remain in position until they all passed by. All things going well, he hoped to be back in his own keep by nightfall, to begin preparing for the inevitable defense of the border, county, and realm.

This Post, for example would be followed by the status Report:

<ECM On; Improved Sensors>

I will use the same system to notify you of any damage to your and your oponents' Mecha (Opponets' damage only if it's visible from the outside)

For those with Ablative Armor, the first damage result(s) will normally be

<Armor Degraded x/y>

(Unless an extremely lucky or devastating hit was scored and caused systems damage right away.)

Once the Ablative Armor is gone, the regular amor and any internal and external systems can be either <Damaged>, <Destroyed> or <Obliterated>.

A <Damaged> system still works, but at reduced effectivity.

A <Destroyed> system ceases to function until it gets repaired.

An <Obliterated> system is destroyed beyond repair and must be replaced. Some <Obliterated> results (such as losing a leg) can effectively incapacitate the entire Mecha.

In the unlucky case of the Pilot suffering damage, the ratings <Wounded>, <Incapacitated> and <Killed> will be used instead.

Eh, photobucket converted it to jpeg... but I made up a little thing for Mercy's reticule. I've always loved targeting reticules for some reason, they're my favorite part of the HUD. I don't know why Razz

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff72/infinity-omega/MercyReticule.jpg

Top green lines (with the moving bulk on them) are Devastator markers and range indicators.

The multicolored bars show laser strength and temperature, which are closely (though not ALWAYS) related. This is in Battletech vein, where overheated lasers can't fire, and the charge indicator is so fast (for the gatling laser) it's hard to see. The Laser Cannon, however, would take a bit to charge.

The HUD switches between two colors based on lighting conditions. During low-light situations the HUD displays as a bright cyan blue, which isn't hard on the eyes but is very easy to see against the dark. In daylight conditions, the HUD changes to a "burnt orange" color, which is a bit darker and constrasts with most anything natural.

The only exception are deserts, which the Vayne fiefdom has a lot of experience fighting in. As a sort of symbolic ritual, all Vayne HUDs are set to display desert fighting in a purple HUD (much like their colors).

Hmm...

No one else wants to react to the Prince stepping out of line?

About the political situation in Nūrande:

The past decade of peace between Myrandria and Patroponne has been quite profitable for Nūrande County. Lying along the fastest route between most of Myrandria and the Patroponnese seaports, the County has seen a good deal of traffic coming through. Countess Nķadan has been to Patroponne personally on numerous occasions to establish further trade relations.

There have never been any signs of disloyalty on Nūrande's part, and it can be expected that a war between Myrandira and Patroponne should have rather devastating effects on the Nūrandean economy.

Davion Vayne wrote:
...As he rolled the volume of the open communications channel back up to normal, he focused the improved sensors in the direction Lord Jon would have taken.

"Patroponne delegation, you are off course. Please deviate from your current route and return to bearing three-twenty-five. That course will take you back to the proper road."

The targeting reticule faded into view on his viewscreen, Mercy's sensors and weapons connecting seamlessly. He toggled a switch...

Sorry, my grammar may have been a bit convoluted. In this reply, he is speaking over open communications. He's also aiming at one of the Blyke's, but hasn't fired yet... Though he's not far off from it.

Yeah, I got that.

But that still leaves two members of the escort who haven't shown any kind of reaction to the recent developements...

Well, you did mention that it's the fastest trade route. Exactly why should this be seen as anything unusual? Confused

Ah!

The perils of describing Geography in words only...

Well, I guess this map should illustrate quite nicely what's wrong with the Prince's choice of route:

So the Prince is veering right when he should be going straight, is that it?

Yep!

That road probably doesn't simply end at Nūrande Castle, but it won't take the Patroponnese anywhere near the border to their Duchy.
