Here's to LARPing! Also known as Live Action Role Play! Gotta love it. Anyone else?

For those of you that are too 'dignified' to be a LARP participator, you're missing out on a lot.

My favorite is when people stay up really late, drink lots of coffee, and then spar using ForeFX lightsabers. Never done it meself, but YouTube videos are AWESOME.

Rule 1 of LARPing: if you know someone isn't going to understand, do not tell them about it. You will be ridiculed for the rest of your life. >_>

Unless you give them Pavlovian conditioning not to do so (read: hit them with a fake sword repeatedly. Very Happy).

Doesn't work if you're pacifistic.

If you're pacifistic, why are you LARPing in the first place?

The same thought crossed my mind at seeing this. LARPer's give us normal RPG'ers a bad name.

Take my little brother, for example. He's always been the football-playin', truck-drivin, gun-toten', good old american jock stereotype. He's always made fun of me for being a bit of a nerd, and playing playing video games and such. It's ok though, because we're alright with our relationship.

Then one day, he comes up to me with tear-strained eyes.

"Mato" he says, (not really, but bear with me.) "I'm so sorry. I've made fun of you all these years, and you're the most normal nerd I've ever met."

And I'm like, "Huh?"

So he continues: "You know your video games? I saw a video of guys playing them on youtube."

"So? That happens alot." I said.

"No, no no, no no no. By 'playing them', I mean, like in real life. Reinacting them. Two guys throwing invisible fireballs at each other for 500 damage or something like that. It was hilarious, and sad. I'm sorry. For all those times I've made fun of you, I see now that you haven't deserved it. I'm truly sorry."

I felt rather proud of myself after that.

LARPing is fun. I have been involved in one called Amtgard since 1996.

You know, a part of me DOES think it looks like fun, but with the friends I have they would never let me live it down if I ever even thought about trying it. Plus, I dunno. I guess I'd just feel silly to play pretend with rules, you know? Damage and what not, I like imagineing stuff within specific universes, but out-right re-enacting just isn't my cup of tea.

Good for you guys though, if you like it than I'm glad you have a good time!

That's why we don't overdo it with the rules. ^_^ The only problem we really had was with the plot - instead of letting one person give the story, we all sorta contributed, and that made it very strange.

Dispite what your friends might say, I alway encourage people to try LARPing at least once. You never know until you try it. And if it is not your cup of tea then no real big loss. At least you can say you tried.

I used to do small bits of what would probably be called LARP as improv practice in a drama group i belonged to. It was fun.

I would consider doing it again, but probably as more of a re-enactment type thing than a fantasy-and-magic one - hitting people with foam swords i can get on board with, shooting them with imaginary fireballs, not so much...

Way too insecure for such things. However, I will say that I hold a mirrored if not greater level of disgust towards anyone who feels disgusted by such activities.

LARPing is fun! There's a place called Castle of Chaos not too far from my house that supplies indoor environments for it-it doubles as a haunted house in the fall. It's good times, to watch and participate in-but I don't do it very often at all because there's always someone who takes it too seriously...creepy seriously. Confused

The spells are the best, though. Throwing bean bags at people? How could life get any better?
