A dozen men and women were sitting around the large round table in the conference chamber of Calden Castle, residence of Queen Ayneira of Myrandria. Many of them were lords and ladies of their own counties somewhere within the kingdom. All of them were expert Mecha pilots, mighty warriors and skilled tacticians. They were the queen's chosen ones, her inner council, advisors and protectors of their monarch.

They had been sitting there like this for the better part of an hour, for the most part discussing the cause for their presence: The Prince of Patroponne's visit to Myrandria, the Queen's decision concerning the planned marriage and the inplications this would have for the future relations of the two realms.

The conversation died down as a holographic image appeared over the center of the table. It showed Prince Garran, waiting in on of the small meeting rooms just down the corridor from where the knights were sitting. A few moments after the transmission had started, Queen Ayneira entered the picture. She was clad in the close-fitting jumpsuit of a Mecha pilot, her hair bound in a simple ponytail. Her plain and martial appearance contrasted by the excessive finery of the Prince's garments. A murmur went through the assembled knights: This was a tremendous breach of protocol, and diplomatically the equivalent of a slap in the Prince's face.

Prince Garran seemingly chose to ignore the Queen's less than appropriate appearance. He wore a jovial smile on his face as he addressed his host: "Ah, Ayneira, my dear! Finally! I was beginnig to wonder when I would be allowed to see my bride..."

"About that..." Queen Ayneira cut him off, "I never made any secret of the fact that I personally dislike you, Prince Garran. Nevertheless, I would have been willing to endure this planned marriage for the good of my people. However...
During this last year, I have made it one of my priorities to observe the kind of rulership your father and you exercise over your own realm. And I have reached the conclusion that a marital union with your family can not be in the best interest on the people on Myrandria.
I must therefor inform you that I can not agree to marry you."

The smile had vanished from the Prince's face. "I am sorry to hear of your lack of sympathy for my person, but I do not think that this is really your decision to make. Our marriage was agreed to years ago by our parents as part of a contract, which your father, the late King signed..."

"I am very aware of all provisions of this contract;" Ayneira interrupted, "and I think it was a big mistake of my father to ever agree to it. Back then, as Princess, I had no choice in the matter, but now I am Queen and need to make my own decisions. And my decision is that I find myself unable to fulfil this specific provision."

By now the Prince was obviously agitated. "This breach of contract is an insult of the highest order and will have dire consequences for you and your kingdom!"

"Ah, but now it is you who makes decisions which are nor yours to make. I suggest that you return to your father, the Duke, as soon as possible and inform him of my answer. He is the one to decide which consequences he would attempt to impose on my country.
I do not believe there is any more to say in this matter, and indeed you welcome in this place has come to an end. Farewell, Prince Garran."

With these words, the Queen of Myrandria turned on her heel and walked out of the holograph. The transmission continued for a few more seconds before the picture dissolved into thin air. Immediately the discussion picked up again with renewed vigor. Some of the assembled knights left their places and headed for the communications terminals set into the back wall of the chamber. But all talk and action was cut short as moments later the main doors opened and Queen Ayneira walked in.

"Well, my friends, I may just have given the Duke a reason to declare war on us...
But whatever happens, I will leave it to him to open up the hostilities.
Now, to business. We have lots of preparations to make.
Lady Alana, Sir Henry, I want the two of you suited up and ready to move out within the hour. You will escort the Prince out of my country.
Lord Kleas and Lord Vayne, you might want to join them. Your fiefdoms lie close to the Patroponnaise border. If the Duke chooses to attack us, they'll be among his first targets.
Kára, I need to speak with you in private.
The rest of you, contact your fiefdoms and have them prepare to mobilise your troops. We may need every gun we have, and we may need them quickly.
Anyone got any question that need answering right now?"

Yes, Sir Henry thinks, what were you thinking? But he knows all too well Ayneira's reasoning, and as much as the idea of open war may be abhorrent, he knows that this is the best course of action for Myrandria. He voices none of these thoughts, instead bowing and leaving to run preliminary checks on Caballus.

As he leaves, his right spaulder detatches itself. The comms drone hovers at head height, waiting to relay information in case the knight is still needed.

Alana let the light of the hologram play across half closed eyelids as the Prince and Queen had their brief exchange. The outcome had never really been in doubt from the moment the queen had summoned them, for all the talk, you didn’t call upon a force this large to witness your acceptance. This was just confirming the inevitable.

Prince Garran blathered on in the background; he was an idiot, playing the same hand’s worth of threats over again as if it would make a difference. Alana raised an eyebrow as the hologram faded from sight and rose to her feet as the queen came in. There were a host of reasons to help the prince out of the country; both symbolic and military. In a way it was just as great a replay as the prince’s earlier threat but veiled under paper-thin civility. It was a veil that could come off all too quickly if their aims ever came to clash. She bowed to the queen and left for her quarters to suit up.

The familiar black and grey of Hashriel had been pressed into starch laden stiffness by the servants. Waiting on her bed it formed a strange contrast to the light sheets. Alana shrugged into its cold embrace, and tied her hair back out of the way as she left the room. The mecha stables weren't far and an hour was still some time, she'd check on Archer before they had to collect the Prince. Sir Henry would probably be there too, along with whoever else was going on their little expedition, it would be good to find out before hand.

Jon turned from the comm console as Ayneira walked in. Understanding his instructions perfectly, he turned back to the console. The girl was unfortunately right; Garran was a dandy and would be a miserable leader, and she had no choice but to reject the marriage bargain into which she had been sealed, for the good of her people. At the same time, Jon's more peasant sensibilities rankled at her use of "my country." A country was its people's, and though Ayneira might give lip service and even some action to the idea of the best interests of her people, she didn't have the natural fluency with the idea that had always reassured Jon in other leaders, particularly the Ambrian officers who had molded him into the soldier that he still was- whatever his titles might say.

As his connection finally reached his head of staff in Kleas, the picture resolved. Jon only waited for the other to nod as he gave his brief missive: "She did what we knew she would; a credit to her, but with the expected outcome. I'm on my way now; Lord Vayne and I will accompany the Prince's escort as far as our respective lands. Follow the first set of instructions I left for you in the file. Anything pressing I should expect to deal with upon my return, or beforehand?"

"None, lord. It's all been quiet. Still double-watches on the Patroponne border."

"Good. Have the officers assembled upon my return. I expect no delays. Calden out."

As he turned away from the terminal, he caught sight of Sir Henry on his way out of the room and called to him. "We're leaving within the hour, I understand? I wonder if I might travel slightly ahead of the escort; neither I nor the Hologram is in precisely the state we ought to be for a diplomatic escort, and I confess I desire to be back in my lands not a moment later than I must. I'll stay within a half hour's march should either of us run into anything unexpected." He thought of his prized Mecha and the repainting it had been in the middle of undergoing when he had received the summons to the capital. He himself wore field uniform he had been wearing for his review of the border posts, one of the many preparations he had been making in anticipation of today's ceremony, such as it was. Its black and silver seemed appropriate to his thoughts: worried, yet edged with pleasure both at Ayneira's actions and having anticipated them. It pleased him to serve such a ruler, whatever her age, and he hoped that she would only grow into her reign. Provided she has a reign.

Sir Henry wheels around at Lord Kleas' call.
"Not an inadvisable idea. As bold a move as this is from our Queen, it is not entirely unpredictable for her, and it would be reasonable for the Duke to have anticipated it and prepared for it. Take your position ahead... and while you're out there, I suggest you scout the border carefully."

Kára smiled as Ayneira walked into view of the hologram and delivered her message to the Prince. He reacted as expected, his reaction would almost be considered funny if it weren't for all the potential casualties that could be coming down upon their country.

Either way Kára kept her face blank as Ayneira re-entered the room and began handing out orders. Kára nodded to Ayneira at the mention of her name and walked to stand beside her Queen as the others filed out of the room.

[[OOC: I'm assuming that Kára will follow Ayneira out of the meeting room to where ever they're to talk privately]]

Davion, that is to say Lord Vayne, watched the holographic display with mild amusement. Thin fingers tapped lightly on his smiling lips as he leaned back into his seat, crossing one leg over the other. His dark purple flight suit, with brilliant silver etching and accents was hidden beneath a tunic of Myrandria's equally bright colors.

The "Prince" should learn to play his cards in a bit more fashion... he thought to himself, as the Prince became flustered. As the Prince grew angry, Davion's smile turned into a smirk. A spoiled boy, never had his toys taken away, I imagine...

His contempt for the spoiled prince was clean from his face when Ayneira entered. As the doors swung open, he dropped his feet to the floor and rose with a modestly hurried bow. While not normally a stickler for such things, he was raised to show respect to a Queen who was about to give them such amusing news.

And amusing it was, with plenty to send the rest of the royalty into a fervor almost instantly. Davion glanced across the room for a moment, noting the people who were already suiting up for their "escort" to the border. In truth, it would probably come to open conflict as soon as they approached the border with the Prince. Davion suspected an ambush, most especially if Ayneira was with them.

"By your leave, my queen, I shall accompany the escort on my way to make the preparations for the Duke's 'reply'." Lord Vayne offered, and swept his foot back to properly bow to the Queen. His formality, at least to him, always felt so forced. Perfection, as demanded by his overbearing father, was a mask worn at all times in the presence of fellow royalty.

He could almost, if he tried hard enough, hear his father bellowing at him as he took leave from the room and strode down the hall calmly. He was following whomever was headed to the stables first, or if nobody was going directly there, they would find him there when they arrived.

As others entered, Davion would be leaning up against Mercy, thumbing a few textual communications to his personal adviser.

Alai, prepare the whole of the local government for my arrival. There will be important announcements, and many preparations to make. We will entertain many guests. More information when I see you.

Seeing that no further questions arose from the assembled knights, Queen Ayneira took her leave and led Kára to her private study. There she picked up a datapad lying ready on her desks and turned to face her friend and bodyguard.

"I want you to go with the escort as well. Get set up in one of the border counties. You will be my personal representative until I arrive in person with the main host of our armies.

The Duke is no fool. We must assume that he expected my refusal and is already prepared for these 'consequences' Garran tried to threaten me with. For all that we know, the collected armies of Patroponne may already be standing ready near their border, waiting only for the return of their Prince to lead them to invade us.

If this is the case, I'm puting you in command of our country's defenses.

It might seem more appropriate to hand this job to one of the Counts, but my standing orders for the case of an early attack are such that the counts most likely will not like then very much.

The mercenary army of Patroponne is huge! The Counts with their few local regiments wouldn't stand a chance against them. If Patroponne attacks us before our main host is ready, my orders to all frontline forces is to retreat!

If you can see a way to delay the Duke's advance and buy us some more time, then do so, but you must not allow the counts to waste valuable forces in suicide charges or last stands!"

She handed the datapad to Kára. "Here, take this. It contains all I just said as formal, documented orders, signed and sealed."

===============================================

Anyone in the Mecha stable, feel free to describe any pre-mission preparations and social interaction you see fit.

The Prince's Mecha 'Cossack' is parked at one end of the stable, along with two further Mecha and a hoverlift transport in the livery of the Duke of Patroponne. On this vehicle the Prince has brought his own service crew. These servants keep themselves busy prepping the three Mecha for their home journey.

The two Mecha flanking 'Cossack' look almost identical to each other. Each sports a Laser Cannon and Gatling Laser, two Missile Pods and Jump Jets. Even the Coats of Arms painted on ther breast plates are extremely similar, indicating that the pilots of these machines must be closely related.

Anyone devoted to heraldic studies, or living near the Patroponnaise border can recognize the white and red shield as the Arms of Blyke, an influential family within the Duchy of Patroponne.

Towards the end of the hour set by the Queen, the pilots of these two machines come striding into the stable. They are as similar to each other as their Mecha are. Obviously siblings, probably twins, and even though they are of opposite genders, it would be hard to tell one from the other just by looking at their faces.

The Blyke twins won't acknowledge the presence of any of the Myrandrian Knights in any way, even if they're directlyspoken to. Instead, they supervise the service crew and check their work. The male even climbs into the Prince's Mecha and tests its systems.

When these preparations are finished, the Patroponnaise service crew enter the hoverlift transport - along with the Prince's luggage - and leave the castle ahead of their masters.

The Prince himself is "fashionably late". Like his bodyguards, he will completely ignore the Myrandrians. After he's convinced himself of his Mecha's condition all three of them mount up and make to leave.

Davion had passed the time, leaning against Mercy's leg and reviewing the latest diagnostics the service crews had done. It had been quite some time (in his eyes) since his mecha had seen serious action, and most of the maintenance lately was general repairs to aging parts. That may not last much longer, however.

Blyke, he mused to himself. I wonder what bidding war they went through, to get a position like guarding the prince on this little errand...

Of course, his homeland of Vayne being so close to the Patroponne, he knew the arrogance of their pilots. The contempt they they had for him, and that he had for them, was very likely palpable as he watched them stride past. Like a hawk, he kept his vision on them as they worked, watched them move without speaking. All of this, while not so much as lifting his head from his datapad.

Once some of Myrandia's own pilots started entering, he let himself exhale. Giving a nod to the other three who he knew would be accompanying the prince, he began to climb the rungs of Mercy's leg, toward the much more safe confines of his pilot's chair. It would have been foolish indeed to discuss tactics in earshot of the prince, better to wait until they could use the mecha's own communication systems.

[[Mmmf... must retconn because of twelve-hour day selling fireworks... But Tenshi you're perfect.]]

As Jon swung into the stable at a trot, still in his fatigues from the meeting, he caught sight of his adored Hologram. Wrist-mounted gatling lasers looked clear, and the armor was pocked and dented but solid. He grabbed a ladder without waiting for pre-activation checks or support crews and climbed to the cockpit, calling to Lord Vayne as he did: "Lord Vayne. I must travel before the Prince and his cronies arrive, but we must discuss mutual defense of our fiefdoms once we return home. No doubt our armies can work better together than separately, and I think none of us doubts the necessity of them in the near future. But now there is no time. Until the coming time." He felt the cockpit close around him and raced through the start-up sequence as his machine hummed under him. As soon as it was moving, he brought it around to the stable door and strolled the titan out into the sunlight.

"Main tank pressure?"
"Thirty point two bar gauge."
"Legs?"
"All joints optimal."
"Arms?"
"All joints optimal."
"Gatling laser?"
"Green."
"ECM jammer?"
"Green."
"Comms system?"
"...we're talking over it."
"Sorry. Sensor systems?"
"Range optimum, resolution optimum."
"All checks green, you are good to go. Anything you experience from here on out is your own damn problem."
"Thank you, Plant."
Sir Henry retreives an apple from his storage bay and bites into it. Plant would probably have a fit if he saw him eating in the cockpit, but hey, who's looking? Besides, that last remark was verging out of the "cheeky lovable mechanic" façade that Plant often wore and edging into insolence... a little fit might do him good.
Eating his apple, the knight sits back and waits for the Cossack to move.

Ranks of behemoth machines draped with their instruments of death loomed over Alana as she entered the mecha stables. Sound carried strangely in the vast room giving it a sense she always found somewhat akin to a graveyard. Archer was waiting, his chest standing open next to a boarding gantry, a dead thing ready to purr into life. She took her time to make a visual inspection of the mecha, for all the computer readouts might say more it only became real when you saw it for yourself.

Alana was perched on Archer’s shoulder inspecting the Gatling mount when Prince Garran’s bodyguard entered, they didn’t seem interested in anything other than their machines and she didn’t see a reason to make the effort of knowing them. There wasn’t anything visibly wrong with Archer; climbing down into the mecha’s chest she strapped herself in, extended her arms to grasp the cockpits control arms and flicked a line of switches on the left to a green ready position.

The world descended into relative darkness accompanied by the faint hiss of a pressure seal as the mecha closed around her. Nearby walls were illuminated by the glow of switches and buttons in various states of readiness, a small holographic status readout on the righthand control arm sketched a list of bootup checks in white fire through the air.

‘External power neg
Air external pos’

Other lines followed blurred too quickly for any eye to follow then disappeared altogether as the boot sequence completed. The walls appeared to dissolve as the mecha’s sensors painted their information onto them. Alana tapped out a sequence of commands instructing the computer to overlay tactical information and a partial model of the mecha onto the sensors. She now seemed to hang in the air surrounded by a ghostly giant; held in place only by its control apparatus. Simple coloured dots noted the aimpoints of Archer’s ranged weapons, neat brackets formed themselves around possible targets while text besides them gave a readout on known information. Slaving the gatling laser to her eyesight she keyed the coms to encrypt and tuned them to the group’s channel.

“So, anyone know who’s ridding with the prince today; actual trouble or just along for the ride?”

Archer took a step forwards shaking itself clear of the now defunct supporting lines from the ‘stables.

Davion climbed the final rungs up the inside of Mercy's leg, and slid deftly into the open piloting system in the lower abdomen. Behind him, several foot-thick layers of armor plate slid into place and sealed. As he slid calmly into the large leather chair, he even caught himself smiling.

"Mercy..." he murmured softly, pulling off the tunic which bore Myrandria's colors. This was his mecha, this was his place.

As soon as the word passed his lips, internal lights began glowing softly. Cool blue lights flooded the room first. Ultra-low power requirements, he could run these in complete stealth mode and still get away with minimal internal visibility.

"Have I, Mercy...?" he continued speaking to the air around him, everything else still dark. Though, he couldn't help but smile as he clicked the harness into place.

"Mercy, I have none." replied a heavily computerized voice. The normal lamps warmed to a normal glow in a halo above and below him, lighting the rest of the "room" around him. His seat slid forward on a solid metal beam through the floor, and locked into place via several industrial grade locking mechanisms.

Showtime, he thought to himself as he placed the communications headset over his head. Nimble fingers reached out, tapping as they raked across the 180 degrees of console before him. Buttons, switches, and nobs all turned in such rapid succession, so deftly, that he was almost a step ahead of the warm-up. Almost...

Three large screens flickered to life, displaying another full 180 degree view in front of him, with auxiliary screens above and below that currently remained offline. They would be that way, at least until he unlocked the weapons.

"Mercy, give me your status."

First, a single voice, then another, and a third. More voices joined the line until it was very nearly inaudible to the untrained ear.
...."Primary Weapons Online, Secondary weapons Online..."
........."Sensor Suite active; Thermal, Visual, and EM mapping system checks clear..."
................"Visual Imaging Online, Reactor Online, Communications Online..."

Then, silence. Until finally, a deep baritone of a masculine voice spoke in a calm voice that spoke volumes of it's voice donor's strength and wisdom.

"All systems are operating within normally specified parameters. Encoded frequencies are established by both Myrandria and Patroponne. Shall I key you in to Myrandria's frequency?"

Davion was now smiling ear to ear. One of his few joys...no, pleasures in life was this: sitting at the controls of his personal mount. A war machine that, in his mind, was as capable (if not more capable) than almost any other like it. She had taken more beatings than most mecha could stand and live to tell the tale, and her personal kill count was well into the double digits before he had even come to spend most of his time at Myrandria.

And, as Davion slipped his hands into the two control sticks, and placed his feet upon the control pedals beneath him, he nodded. "Yes, Mercy. Key me in please. Also, send word via burst transmission to Alai that we will be arriving slightly behind schedule. I want to stick close to the convoy, and make sure the Duke thinks twice before trying to start a war before we can adequately prepare."

"Shall I have Master Alai mobilize our RRU on the border nearest the meeting location, just in case?"

Davion thought for a moment. In a sense, it would be as much a declaration of war as Duke Patroponne needed. Armed escort, mobilization of troops at the border of local fiefdoms? No, Davion would not be the catalyst to the carnage this time.

"Negative. Simply relay that we will be running behind, give him our timetable and keep him updated via burst transmission as possible.."

There was no reply, instead a visual "blip" on the otherwise still clean viewscreen indicated he was connected to Alana and the other knights. He was given her message, delayed though he may have been in getting it.

"Blykes, they are." The contempt in his voice was still very nearly material. "They are powerful, and for Patroponnese, skilled. Do not underestimate them, and like all snakes do not let them find your back before you remove the arm holding the knife."

[RRU = Rapid Response Unit. In short: Highly mobile, high speed attack mecha focusing on responding quickly and tying up enemy forces, though not necessarily defeating them until heavier support can arrive.]

[[OOC: is this a miss spell or soemthing? "...turned to fae her friend and bodyguard" otherwise i'm not sure how fae fits into that sentence.?]

Kára followed Ayneira into her study and glared daggers at her as she outlined the plan, but held her tongue until she finished and handed her the data pad. She kept her peace for a second longer, to collect her thought and read through the data pad, before speaking.

"You know I have problems with you traveling without me. But I can also see the need for me to go ahead. Davion will not appreciate this plan, it will be interesting to see how well his honour holds up."

Kára turned and paced away from Ayneira and then turned back and stopped in front of her still glowering.

"I'll go, but you must keep your guard with you at all times! No doing something stupid and risky. And remember you'll have to face me before you face anyone else if you get hurt." At this last remark Kára smiled at Ayneira and sighed as she reached out to squeeze her arm.

"You did the right thing, that Prince will be a tyrant, at least this way we have a chance to fight against him rather then laying down to his rule. Take care of yourself and don't give my father reason to come back and haunt me."

With that Kára turned to go and then turned back again holding up the data pad, "Do you think i should give the 'men' their marching orders before we head out? Just to make sure they tow the company line?"

"Don't you worry about me, Kára. When I'll be heading your way, I'll have the assembled armies of the entire kingdom to keep me safe."

Ayneira watched her bodyguard - soon to be her general if things did go wrong - as she made to leave, but then turned back to her.

"Do you think i should give the 'men' their marching orders before we head out? Just to make sure they tow the company line?"

"I'll leave that decision to you. Part of the perks of being command."
At this, she gave Kára a wink.

"It might be a good thing to have them prepared and deal with any objections ahead of time. But telling them too early could also get them all riled up for nothing - after all we may not get to have a situation at all"
