These Shields look great! do you have a special program to do them, of did you just draw them in a regular graphics program?

However, I'm afraid Ayneira's CoA is not correct. You've drawn the Dragon passant contourné (walking from left to right). Passant reguardand means it's still walking from right to left, but has its head turned to look behind itself.
I just found that Wikipedia is incorrect in this case as well (they use reguardant with both meanings). This Site is more accurate.

We weren't sure whether or not to use a lozenge for the field, Ayneira being a woman, but figured with her no longer being a princess she'd get the full shield. The dragon passant is stolen directly from the Welsh flag.

She gets a Shield because she's also a Knight in her own right.

Or were you thinking of the kind with a really long point on the bottom?
I think the pointy bottom design is much more iconic and therefor better suited to be used on a Coat of Arms.

Thanks. Very Happy

Paint Shop Pro 7. We've had that program for at least three consecutive computers - but that means we're familiar with it, and can make it dance much more efficiently than Photoshop.
However, they weren't made completely from scratch - the Wikimedia Commons has a bunch of example files. Henry's coat is this recoloured and Charles' is this modified and recoloured. The other two use the same shield shape - plus, as previously mentioned, the dragon was stolen from here. Oh, and the banners with the mottoes on are modified Word Autoshapes.

JackAce wrote:

Yeah, already realised that (see the edit in the last post). Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find a dragon passant regaurdant to steal. However, we might be able to turn the current dragon's head around with a little pencil-and-paper drawing...

You're probably right... though we'll wait for a reply from Spindrifter (and a new motto, come to that) before making the second one. (Hehe, pointy bottom...)

By the way, you still haven't given a motto to use. Does that mean you're happy with "here be dragons"?

P.S. Spindrifter, are you aware that red on black breaks the Rule of Tincture? Not saying it doesn't look good, though.

Double post again! The second iterations of Ayneira and Kleas' coats are done!

Not completely happy with how the crests came out, but the neck scales worked well. ^_^ All in all, not the worst job we've ever done.

The gem is made out of Autoshapes again. Oddly, they didn't have anything with more sides than an octagon (and we wanted more facets than that would give), so we had to get creative with pentagons for the orthography. It worked well, though. ^_^
Instead of resizing the Kleas banner, we took the easy way out and assigned a new motto. "Pulvis et umbra sumus" translates to "We are dust and shadow." Thought it kinda fitted the sable field.

How do you like this for a gemstone?

The picture quality is pretty crappy (I hate jpeg). If you like the design, PM me and I can mail you the colorless PSP7 original.

As to the Ayneira's Motto, I'm still thinking on that one...

Shiny. Did you make that?

Also, we're gonna stop tweaking these for a while. Partly because it takes up a fair bit of time and partly because we've taken up half the thread with them.

It's based on an illustration I found on Google.

I rezised it and then retraced the lines to clean them up.

Whoa. The crest rocks, sirs. Thank you much. And while I like the "pulvis et umbrae" motto, especially in the light of Jon's livery being silver and sable, I think I must prefer "Facere esse est" or "To do is to be." He's not quite so dark; in fact, he would be more of the "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter" personal bent. And yes, the last iteration there was more what I had in mind; it looks wonderful.

Nice motto. 'Tis changèd. (see above; hard refresh if necessary)

Anyone figured out "Melior citius fortius" and its origin yet?

Edit: Whoo, post 100!

Would that be "bigger faster stronger", Tetris? I don't know Citius but Fortius would be a comparative adjective, and while melior might be better it could also be bigger...

I haven't had time to edit my bio I sent you, Lope. I'm sorry, I'll try to sneak it in sometime soon, but I'm trying to spend more time with my son at the moment. I only get 5 weeks with him a year, and this is the three week block. I'm losing sleep to check the forums at all, actually. I'll see if I can re-read the bio, your responses, and drop it here in thread before I call it a night...

Edit: Tired now. Let me know if anything needs editing on this. I think it'll fit in... but meh, I suck at medieval.

Character Datasheet

Feudal Data
Name: Davion
County: Vayne
Coat of Arms: (I'm going to be honest and say I have no real idea how to say this in the proper language... Anyhow: Silver Symmetrical Cross on Purple background, raven in top-left canton with a sky blue (bleu celeste) jewel for it's visible eye. If that needs further fixing, let me know..)
Livery: Purple and Silver
Personal Melee Weapon: Rapier

Personal Data
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 160lbs
Hair Color: Black (light purple sheen, kept in ponytail)
Eye Color: Grey/Silver
Skin Color: Pale

Mecha Data
Name: "Mercy"
Main Weapon (right): Laser Cannon
Main Weapon (left): Gatling Laser
Support Systems:
- Devastator Missile (x2)
- Advanced Sensor Platform
- Ablative Armor (x2)
- Missile Pod

Personality & Background:
A quiet child, Davion was not well suited for being bartered for land or advantage. With a generally "dark" demeanor, and little desire to speak his mind on most matters, he was considered to be nearly worthless in that regard. He was still given the same education and training as his siblings, where he excelled in both. Other than being quiet and normally considered to be hiding within himself, Davion has proven to be quick thinking in a critical situation. Also, he has shown compassion toward his fellow man (so long as he is not reminded of their ignorance).

Davion was born, like many knights, into a royal bloodline. He was the seventh of ten children by his mother, and the sixth of nine by his father. While the county was, in truth, bound to his mother and not his father, his eldest brother on his father's lineage found this unacceptable, and posed a coup. Davion had, being further on down the lineage, been sent away to train as a Knight.

Upon returning one year to celebrate holidays with his family, he found his home in the midst of a rather brutal civil war. His eldest brother had chosen to slay his eldest sister, and in the aftermath claimed himself the rightful heir. This infuriated their mother, who had the boy beheaded for treason. This did not sit well with the father, who then declared his wife unfit to lead and attempted to take her throne by force. The children were divided quite equally, and before even a peacekeeping force could be sent from anywhere else, they had destroyed nearly their entire county.

Davion set to work immediately, using his absence as a ploy to gain access to both camps at different intervals. From this ability he gleaned the locations of both forces, and relayed this to inbound "support" knights. As the knights purged the Vayne stock, for charges varying from murder to treason, they chose to spare the one Vayne who had been absent from his home, and had shown loyalty to the queen above his own blood.

From there, Davion was granted a place at the Queen's side. He has served as a heavy weapons specialist and fire support for the Queen since.

((OOC: BTW, we need regular ol' machine guns. I'd trade my Missile Pod for a .50 cal chaingun like on the nose of the A-10...)

Purpure, a cross argent, in dexter chief a raven sable orbed celeste.
(I omitted the "crystal for an eye" part because it would be too small to recognize on a regularly sized shield.)

I had planned for projectile weapons to be utterly obsolete and completely replaced by lasers. The equivalent of an MG used by infantry units is basically one barrel of a Gatling Laser...

However, purely mechanical weapons might yet serve a useful function as emergency defense, since they remain oberable even if the Mecha has lost all power.

So, how about this:

Defensive Weapon: Defensive weapons are old fashioned mechanical weapons like Machine Guns, Grenade Launchers or lighter versions of Flamethrowers. Their main purpose is to give the pilot the means to defend himself against capture by enemy infantry in case his Mecha gets incapacitated.
For this reason these weapons are usually mounted directly in the cockpit so the pilot can aim and fire the weapon without the assistence of servoes or the targetting computer. The weapon can also be detached from the Mecha to become man-portable.
Defensive Weapons are all but useless against Mecha, but pose a serious threat to infantry and light vehicles.

Lope's right about the jewel - we had to enlarge the bird and then enlarge the eye on top of that just to get it to show up at all, let alone with detail. The lines on the beak and feet warrant a little thickening in the second iteration too... (Notice we didn't say "bear" for once. Hehe, bears... dammit!)

Anyway, here's your first version:

"Ex malo bonum" means "Out of bad comes good." It seemed appropriate, given the Vaynes' background.

Oh, and Spindrifter: you're pretty much on the money. The aim was "Better, faster, stronger." (We have the technology. We can rebuild him!)

(P.S. Which idiot Frenchman decided dexter and sinister should be the wrong way around?)

@Tyris...everything about that is perfect save the color purple. Just a tad, erm, darker if you please.

@Lope: Thank you, I'll edit that in my files Very Happy

They are the right way around... as seen by the bearer of the shield.
