Even though the number of forum members with children is probably pretty low, and most of our forumites are young 20 somethings getting out of university, without kids...

Mother's day is one of those arbitrary holidays. Mothers don't exist only one day a year. They mend scrapes, heal cuts, and kiss boo boos all better all 365 days. They don't use special cards, they don't get to close down the aisle that contains 3AM phone calls crying because of bad decisions. They don't get to run 50% markdown specials on the time investment in their children.

Mother's Day is one day out of the year, but mothers are there every day of every year - even if they're only in our hearts and memories. So, yes, take some time to tell your mother you love her today. But make sure you do it tomorrow, too. And the next day. And keep doing it every day, because there's never a promise that tomorrow will come. Life is as fragile as it is beautiful. And it most certainly is beautiful.

My mom left to go overseas again today. But I got to make her pancakes, and she helped me with sewing, so those were two things we enjoy doing that we were able to do. And we promised each other that we would go to Color Me Mine some day this summer as well.

Happy Mother's Day, though forumite mothers are probably NOT on the forum, today of all days. ^_~

And here I thought it sounded cynical, even confrontational.

Nope, straight out of a store card. If that's cynical then maybe that says something about the state of society and whatnot, If hallmark cards are pessimistic and confrontational, what hope is there? O_O

I believe that it would need to be said implies a certain measure of cynicism. Then again if someone needs to be told perhaps the emotions it's meant to hook onto aren't there in the first place, or are expressed dramatically differently.

Part of me kind of agrees with the sentiment - at least in so far as it's regrettable to let someone leave the house after an argument all annoyed. After all just think how much you'd regret it if they ended up creamed across all three lanes of the motorway and that was the last thing you ever said to them. But another part of me notes that if you're not prepared to hurt people they'll walk all over you; love carried to extremes dramatically weakens your hand.
