IKEAs are a rare sight on the west coast. Fortunately, Portland just got it's own about a year ago. It's been perpetually filled with bump and shunt bourgouise each trying to line their pads with skillfully designed asian import furnitures and fixtures.

Me, I can't stand the place. Smells like a slaughterhouse, and I really don't need new furniture for 'low low prices' that bad. That's what craigslist is for, anyhow... right?

Ahhhhhhh CRUD.

The replacement book shelf that I ordered came today (the OfficeMax model discussed above), and it's not what I thought it was either. In fact, it's made by the same company as made the OfficeDepot unit -- they're both produced by some company from Ohio called Sauder. The OfficeMax one does in fact have solid side boards, which is a definite plus, but it hasn't got the rounded edges, it hasn't got the front plates for the shelves, and the color doesn't quite match my other older cases.

I'm stumped. I swear I bought all four of those older cases from either OfficeMax or Office Depot, but I can't find that same unit again on either of their web sites. Now I have to decide whether to return this new unit and try yet again, or else bite the bullet and just use the freaking thing.

I may have to go down to the OfficeMax physically and examine their display units. I know, I know, it goes against the zeitgeist. No one buys anything in person any more; we always buy things sight unseen based ever-so-trustingly on pics provided by the merchants and reviews from random strangers. Where's the fun in actually getting to kick the product a couple of times before you pay for it? It's WAY more fun to buy two book cases in a row and STILL not have what you wanted. BLEAGH!

I suggest specialty shops rather than "Box Stores" like OfficeMax or Office Depot. They tend to have well organized web-sites and such, as well as competitive pricing.

Another option are specialty websites.

I recommend building your own. No worries about proper style, and no cheap cherry veneer.

You wouldn't say so if you knew me better; my attempts at carpentry have come very close to inspiring lawsuits alleging human rights violations.

I admire your dedication to perfection, Tin. To be perfectly honest, I think I would have just said "to heck with it" with the first one and just moved it to a dark corner where I wouldn't have to look at it too carefully

This reminds me that I should consider investing in a bookcase, as all of my books currently either rot away in a closet or rest on extremely cheap particle board racks.
