I'm helping run the Human Trafficking Awareness Day fundraiser this year - and we're going to stick with the same name for it, given that none of us can seem to agree on a new one!

BUT! I'm pretty sure the punctuation used in the name last year is incorrect.

Last Year: Comic Creator's Alliance.

Since there's more than one creator, the apostrophe ought to be AFTER the "s". But should there be an apostrophe at all?

Comic Creators' Alliance: The alliance which belongs to the comic creators

Comic Creators Alliance: Incorrect? Better? Just as good?


BAH. I've been staring at them for too long, lemme know what you grammar nutters think!

I'm pretty sure it would be Comic Creators' Alliance, since (assuming my memory of freshman English is serving me well) it's the alliance that belongs to the comic creators.

Comic Creators' Alliance. When using a regular plural possessive in English, the apostrophe goes after the s.

Comic Creators' Alliance would be an alliance owned by many comic creators

Comic Creators Alliance would be an alliance of comic creators.

That's kind of what I was thinking, Nem. "Creators' Alliance" isn't incorrect, but "Creators Alliance" is more accurate.

In cases like this, I generally advise rephrasing each variant to see which is closer to your intent.

Comic Creators' Alliance = Alliance belonging to Comic Creators


Comic Creators Alliance = Alliance consisting of Comic Creators

Genitive versus ablative. Either one is syntactically valid, but I'm guessing the latter is more what you were thinking. Plus then you don't have to worry where the apostrophe goes, 'cause there isn't one. ^_^
