(Post edited. Now in its final form)

Once he had seen them all to their rooms, Alex breathed a sigh of relief. It was good to see that several people were here, bleary-eyed as they may be, and anxious to take up the prospect of exploration. There weren't as many Sidorovas anymore, not as many Rutans, or for that matter not even as many Armstrongs and Newtons.

As he stepped onto the glowing stairs, he was carried down by invisible forces of manipulated gravity and particle physics. He stretched his arm out, running his fingers along the wall as he went. The familiar hum of signals and energy ran just beyond reach. At the base of the glow stairs, dim lights illuminated the rooms he entered so that he would not be blind in the dark.

Maybe there was a reason interest in the unknown was dying off. There was no more selection pressure, no more need to continue searching for power over one's environment. After taming so much of their native home, people grew complacent. It occurred to him then, staring out at the technological wonderland of something so simple as a public relations and receiving terminal, that they would need to prepare themselves for a world that did not recognize them as residents. He made note to stop by the armory.

-------------------------------------------

The next day began not long after sunrise. To those who had risen with the sun, they would find that the training facility was off limits to the rest of the facility. Any time any one of them approached the stairs, they were awaited by the soft glow of the translucent stairway. Either the stairs didn't react to anyone else, or nobody else wanted to earn a workout.

Around eleven that morning Alex headed up the glow stairs. He was accompanied by another man, who the rest of the team had not met. The two seemed fairly well acquainted, and were chatting about the flight into the station as they arrived.

Alex wore gym shorts, a loose t-shirt, and sported a headband with the USPW logo up front. Also, he was carrying a large box which was nearly stuffed full with documents, spreadsheets, holographic plates, and even the odd sample of different materials. With his assorted load he ascended the much more traditional stairs to the second floor, and then crossed the jogging track and walkway to the room in the center.

A few moments later the walls of the room faded to transparency above two feet. The result was a solid rail of sorts, preventing most cases of acrophobia. Inside the room was a large wooden table in the middle of the room, with chairs surrounding it entirely save for the entryway. There was ample room to walk around the room, and the chairs did seem to be recliners. It was rather like a study suspended above a basketball court.

He placed the schematic of the ship down first, pinning it to the table with samples of various materials.

"It is quite a ship, much larger than the research vessel that took you to Pluto," Alex said to his companion, smiling. "After the meeting, we should go over and have a look. Allow you two to get acquainted, while the rest of the systems are installed," he offered with a smile. Then he returned his attention to the desk he was setting things up on.

On top of the schematic, he arranged half a dozen copies of the same document. Probe transcripts, all of the information they had on their target destination, and even a few photographs in very small scale, with several lines for notes beside them. Once it was all arranged, he smiled to himself. Walking over to the entryway, he placed a small locket in a notch by the door.

"Talia?" he said to the open room.
"Yes, Alexander?" Replied a disembodied female voice.
"Download the Departure presentation from my storage locket. I will return in a few hours to run the program," he smiled, no entirely sure the house AI could see him here.
"Very well. Enjoy your game," she replied in warm tones.

His smile grew. She was a very perceptive intelligence, artificial or not. Reaching into the box he retrieved a blue and white basketball, and his spare change of proper looking clothes. The clothing was laid out on one of the chairs for him to grab later, but the basketball was taken downstairs. Time to get some exercise before the meeting!

"Come on, Arvid! First to ten points, yes?"

[Anyone is welcome to join Alex and Arvid for a bit of basketball before the meeting!]

Naomi got up shortly after seven in the morning, awake if not refreshed. She checked her bags to make sure they were sill where she'd left them, then grabbed the things she'd need for a shower. A half hour later she returned to her room, braiding her still-wet hair and wriggling her feet into the flexible running pads she kept for indoor workouts. On her way out of the dormitory, she saw that breakfast had been set up in the lounge. Smiling happily at the opportunity to eat real food, she saw an overwhelmingly Mediterranean breakfast, but a side table had a more traditional Continental spread. Grabbing a bowl of yogurt and filling it liberally with honey and granola, she sat down on a couch to check her email and send a message home.

Naomi placed her used utensils on the edge of the counter, lacking anywhere better to put them, and went looking for the exercise wing. Now, if she remembered correctly, the stairs up to the running track were right into the lounge, then left out the door and another right. Poking her head around the corner, she saw that she was wrong, the stairs - not moving, this time - were to the left. Nobody was around, and the huge windows showed a glorious early morning, with that peculiar quality to the air that somehow felt like ice-clear water.

To Naomi's pleasure, the track was surrounded by windows, and it felt like running in the sky. The advanced material of the track sometime made it seem as if she was floating, enhancing the illusion. After she had run in almost total silence for nearly an hour, she tapped her earring to bring up the holographic computer screen, and set an album of guitar duets on random repeat to give herself some quiet background music. Naomi tapped her earring again to shutter the screen away, and began jogging again. This time, she paid more attention to her surroundings, and noticed that the platform from last night was actually suspended from slender support beams, not just floating in thin air, and that it was a full lounge and conference center. Some of the lights were already on and a small robot was bustling about near the table. Perhaps that was where they were to meet later that afternoon; if so, she felt better knowing where it was.

Naomi ended her workout with cool-down stretches at about 9:00 am, feeling much better about herself and with enough time to relax before officially meeting the rest of the group.

"After the meeting, we should go over and have a look. Allow you two to get acquainted, while the rest of the systems are installed,"

"Is construction on schedule, or will calibration be pushed back further?"
The newcomer put his travel bag next to the table, and took to eyeing the papers that Alexander had put there while Alex himself set up the resident computer.

"Come on, Arvid! First to ten points, yes?"

Arvid left the pictures on the desk. He had seen them before, and frankly, you bored of them rather quickly.

He still had his travelling clothes on, but he needed to wash them anyway.
They disapeared down the stairs, towards the basketball field.

"On another note, how's the crew?"

Alice slept through the night rather soundly, until around half past eight or nine. When she finally woke, the sun was getting higher. Rolling out of bed, she shuffled around in her duffle for clean clothes, before washing and getting ready - most of the gear she had packed was for travel or some specialist polar gear, so she just pulled on a slightly battered pair of denims and her Kawada Institute t-shirt.

Answering her messages before she left her room, she hauled her bag-sized work terminal* with her, as well as a pocket sized book with a small selection of the work of Miyazawa Kenji. There were still a lot of academic notes she had to write up before their project got underway.

She realised that carting the work terminal with her was possibly something that could be percieved as anti-social, but she also figured if she was needed bad enough, someone would come up and interrupt her.

Taking up a small corner of a long table in the dining hall, she helped herself to a small plate of fruit, a roll and sausage and potato scone, and two mid-sized tubs of petit filous. She'd be sitting typing there until the meeting was called, but she wasn't too bothered if her work was interrupted at this time.

((*I'm assuming they're not called laptops anymore?))

Sarah came to with the sound of people stirring.

“Urgh. Where'mI? Whatime'sit?”

A momentary stab of panic as her limbs caught in the bedcovers was followed by a half minute of flailing about the room finding clean clothes. She settled for a long pleated skirt and a cotton blouse before careening into the kitchen in search of caffeine. Coffee and sugar. A plate with scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. Some orange juice to get rid of the taste.

Alice seemed to be busy, so she took breakfast down to the track where the other woman wouldn't feel obligated to make conversation. Naomi was exercising there. Sarah had heard of running and regarded it as very much a spectator sport. It was one of those things people did before mechanised transport, cybernetic parts, and industrial robots were widely available.

The coffee went down in one swallow like a dose of some unspeakable fowl medicine. A rusty smell nagged at the back of her nose. Of course there are other substitutes for exercise, she thought. And another thought spoke up: they won't grow coffee in space.

Sarah looked at Naomi alongside the empty cup. A dawning awareness that she might be expected to demonstrate a base level of fitness crept upon her. “Fiddlesticks.”

“I don't suppose there's some special trick to it?” She called out half-heartedly.

Either that or I'm going to be limping all over the place for a while.

Naomi was close to the end of her run anyway, and decided to end it there when Dr. Wright called out to her. Smiling as she jogged to a stop, she shook her head.

"No, not really. You just have to get started, that's the hard part." Dropping down to stretch out, Naomi continued. "I grew up on a farm, so we were always pretty active. I enjoy running, but it's a lot more fun when the scenery actually changes."

Naomi eyed her companion's skirt and blouse, and figured that for this initial meeting, perhaps a more formal outfit was in order. She half-smiled as a thought occurred to her - boot-cut instead of straight-leg jeans, perhaps. She knew too many people who would consider that the height of formality, but fortunately, her mother had instilled in her a better-developed sense of femininity.

'We.' Brothers or sisters?

Sarah noted the direction of Naomi's gaze and raised an eyebrow.

“I know, it's a little impractical for exercise - or farming. I blame my city origins; lots of run down warehouses and shops, not so many wide open vistas.”

She doubted whether anyone would live in the city in a few decades. With the advent of adaptable automation and the spread of the 'net there was progressively less reason to concentrate with others.

Alex led Arvid back down the stairs to the basketball court, tucking the basketball under his arm. The facility was being used, which he was pleased with. The conceptual drawings of the upper dormitories had been pretty fantastic to begin with, but once it was all installed it was even more impressive. He had to admit he liked it, and not just from a scientific standpoint. It was very aesthetically pleasing, feeling like you were out in the open.

"Is construction on schedule, or will calibration be pushed back further?"

"Everything has been completed and installed. In fact, I believe they had just finished over the course of the weekend," he replied. "Only the lander is here at Thessaloniki, of course. Our facilities aren't large enough to construct the main hull here. The rest of the ship, the main engines and cabins and all that, is in a construction dock orbiting Luna." He had only visited the site once, and even then early in the construction phases. The end result would be as much a surprise for him as anyone.

Once they arrived on the court Alex was able to see the two women conversing. He smiled to himself, pleased that so far at least a few of them were getting along alright. At least, it appeared so. Hadn't come to blows, anyway.

"On another note, how's the crew?"

"Ah, about the same as you hauled to Pluto, I believe. Most of them are scientists, or in science related fields. We have an archeology student, a psychologist, a biologist, and.." he trailed off, pondering just how to define Professor Wright. "And, for want of better terminology, a historian. I'm quite confident in their abilities. From the returned resumes, they all will have quite a bit to contribute."

As they approached the basket on one end of the court, he launched the ball toward the rim. It smacked noisily into the backboard, then bounced off the side of the metal ring. Alex pursed his lips in frustration, but jogged after the ball all the same. He retrieved it from the side of the court, against one of the transparent plant displays, and bounced it back toward Arvid.

"That reminds me, the ergonomics of the cockpit have been much improved. Notably, it's more like a commercial liner now than anything. Shouldn't run into any problems with repetitive motion, according to the designer."

"Everything has been completed..."

"Good, no yellow tape, then?" Arvid said, and with a small frown at the next part,"Orbit? If it's a floater it's big. Is it capable of an emergency landing, or was there more reasons than lack of space to put it together in zero gravity?"

"...they all will have quite a bit to contribute."

He nodded. There'd be clever people all right. The company sure knew to employ or, if the field of study was practically nonexistent , educate them.

"So, any lab coats coming along?" He didn't know what they'd be doing when they got there, but they probably hoped for more than a rover and some rock samples. He certainly would.

"That reminds me, the ergonomics of the cockpit have been much improved. Notably, it's more like a commercial liner now than anything. Shouldn't run into any problems with repetitive motion, according to the designer."

"Well, at least they have a designer now." He grinned at Alex. The Pluto mission had been rather painful, and he'd be glad to be rid of the brace.

Alex watched Arvid for a few moments, half expecting him to launch the ball while Alex was distracted with questions. After a few moments he relented to the questions with a grin.

"Orbit? If it's a floater it's big. Is it capable of an emergency landing, or was there more reasons than lack of space to put it together in zero gravity?"

Alex shook his head, raising one finger straight up. "Two ships, actually. The primary hauler, which contains all of our supplies, the engines, and living arrangements, then the landing shuttle. The shuttle is fully capable of the journey on its own, but having the larger vessel to resupply allows us to carry a greater scientific payload," he explained casually. It was somewhat old hat to him, though he was eager to see it in action. He then placed his hands on his hips, grinning over at the other man. "It'll all be in the briefing, I promise."

"So, any lab coats coming along?"

"Ah, yes. A few of the design team, as well as a geology team. Small groups, they plan to stay out of the way and examine samples more than anything. You may have one or two of the design team poking about the pilot area if there's a hiccup or some such."

"Well, at least they have a designer now." He grinned at Alex. The Pluto mission had been rather painful, and he'd be glad to be rid of the brace.

Alex dove into reach of Arvid, attempting to smack the ball from the man's hands with an impish grin. Supposing he succeeded, he bounced it a few steps away before shooting a confident grin back at him. "You know how it goes. First they want to be sure it'll fly, then they'll let you invest some funding into wood trim and carbon fibre paneling."

Finn rolled out of bed quite literaly. As she landed on the floor she realized she wasn't in her own comfy bed at home but on assignment. Finn stood up, shook her head and grabbed a change of clothes and some toiletries and headed to the loo. She walked past one of her new co-workers on the way to the loo but as she looked involved decided to hold the chit chat until breaky at least.

Post shower Finn was much more awake as she dropped her things back in her room and grabbed her inspection and diagnostic kit and headed to the kitchen for breaky. She dropped the kit on the table and grabbed some fruit, granola, yogurt and tea and sat down beside the kit.

Finn watched the other woman at the table type for a moment while she decided if she should interupt, shrugged and decided why not and said, " Good morning I'm Finn, I know we were introduced last night but I've forgotten everyones names."

As Finn spoke she went about her morning arm inspection routine, that had been drilled into her when she'd recieved the arm. She lightly tapped a panel on her arm open and plugged a tiny, hand sized screen, into her arm. Tapping the screen once she activated the diagnostic program and then went about eating her breaky.

Alice glanced up from her work and her poetry book, before plopping the book down on top of her keyboard.

"Doctor Alice Carlisle, Kawada Institute. I'm going to be psych officer for this... mission, project... Whatever you want to call it," she said, offering Finn her hand to shake. "Pleased to meet you Finn."

"What is it that you do yourself?"

Finn smiled at Alice and shook her hand, "Formally I'm Dr. Finndabhair O'Neill, with the Biology Department at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Specifically I study biodiversity and community ecology. Essentially what things live where and how they interact. It's good to meet you Alice."

Finn took a sip of her tea and then remembered that she'd actually interrupted what Alice was doing, "I hope I didn't interrupt some important reading? I'm kinda infamous around the department for always interrupting at the most inopportune times." Finn gave Alice a sheepish grin and a shrug just as the tiny screen beeped.

"Oooh toast is done." Finn muttered mostly to herself and grinned as she sized up the report, unplugged the device put it away, and closed up her arm.

Finn smiled again and Alice and explained, "One of my honours students accidentally blurted that one when we were in the field once. Turns out my diagnostic do-hicky sounds exactly like his toaster. You should have seen the colour of his face as he tried to explain. Still makes me giggle."

Arvid considered this. Having a satellite as a base of operations would mean more work, but a greater insurance should something go wrong, and it most certainly meant that the mission could be a long one. Having engineers on board would be a real treat, though. It was nice to know that someone else knew what was supposed, and not supposed to happen if I, say, pulled this lever here a touch to far.

He returned to the real world as Alex nicked the ball.

"You know how it goes. First they want to be sure it'll fly, then they'll let you invest some funding into wood trim and carbon fibre paneling."

"With this launchdate, I think we should be glad if they aren't still working on it when we board." Arvid said,"And how will we spend the time in the fast lane? Do we have enough space for a pool table?"

Naomi smiled and hoped she hadn't offended. "Well, I like a skirt as much as the next girl, and you'd be surprised at how much you can do in one, but you're right. Pants are a wonderful thing."

She stood up and grabbed her towel in preparation for leaving. "I'm heading back down to the rooms to wash up." She hesitated a bit in case Dr. Wright wanted to leave the track as well, then headed back down the stairs.

The sun was well up by this time, and the halls were populated. The illusion of solitude was gone, and it was time to come back down to earth.
