For those that don't know what the writer's group is, it's a group that (used to) meet every month. People sign up, then I'll give them a topic; once the topic is released, you'll have roughly one month to complete a short piece on that subject or in that style that is given. At the end, we vote on who we feel wrote the best while pertaining to the topic.

The topic this time is Chekhov's gun. What this means is that you need to introduce a seemingly irrelevant object early in the narrative whose importance is revealed only toward the end. The name is taken from Anton Chekhov himself, who said that if you place a pistol on the stage in the first act, it should be fired in the second act--otherwise, why put it there in the first place? It's an important element in what most consider "the perfect novel."

Mm. The bitter irony of this challenge for me is that I'm not a fan of Chekov's gun in novels, specifically. I enjoy a novel that takes the time to flesh out seemingly unimportant details, which the characters can either take or leave completely at will to solve their uses. For instance, a fully realized civilization will have all sorts of things the characters will bump into, but never use.

On the other hand, utilizing Chekov's Gun efficiently is a talent that almost every screenwriter has in their arsenal. So, let the games begin!

And, ah, you did mean April 9th, right?
