I gave the old book discussion thread a poke, and general concenus commanded I set up an entirely new thread! So here we are.

I was hoping to try and re-set up the old book discussion group. Essentially people who are interested say so, everyone suggests a book and we go about the business of reading it. Once everyone has plowed through it, we discuss the book and share our thoughts in a separate thread.

The old rules have been copied and pasted for your veiwing pleasure:

1) We allow one week for everybody to acquire a copy of the book. Not everyone will have every title, so we need to allow people time to visit the library, the bookstore (or order it online and get it shipped if they are so keen).

2) We allow one further week after that for reading. In any particular title, it's likely that one or more people will already have read it; it'd be unfair to the people who haven't already read it to just start posting. So nobody jump the gun, people might get left out.

3) Everybody read the whole book. If you've already read it, read it again so it'll be fresh on your mind for discussion.

4) We'll start a new thread for discussing each new book, to make it fairly easy to find, and go about the business of discussing the book.


All that having been said, do we have any takers? Any suggestions?

EDIT: Also, Never Let Me Go was named on several lists as one of the top ten books of the year. I particularly liked it, so I'll also throw that out there.

And I don't have any specific suggestions, but I think tossing in some older, classic books and a few short stories could be fun. =)

I love the idea of a book club- there's my suggestion. I haven't read beyond the first chapter, and this would give me an excuse to actually buy it.

I picked it up because I'm a big Wheel of Time fan and I'd never heard of who they picked to replace the Great and Masterful James Rigney. I was in a bookstore, saw "Branden Sanderson" on the side and felt curious.

10 minutes later I walked away thinking "whoah--~!" Then I stopped, and was amazed by the fact that I was even thinking "whoah!" It's not very often where a book is able to capture my attention that quickly.

Yes, Brandon Sanderson is a master at fantasy. His Mistborn series was excellent (and the ending of the third book took me quite by surprise, which doesn't happen as often as I'd like).

I think I took a stab at doing an ES book club last summer. We were going to read "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik first. But I totally failed to follow through with it. :-/ My bad.

You guys shoudl listen to writing excuses - sanderson, howard tayler from Schlock Mercenary, and dan wells do a short podcast about writing. It's really very interesting.

And yes, Mistborn is fantastic. No spoilers for #3 though, I've still not read it.

It's great to see we've got a few people interested here. If people would like to make a couple of clear, serious suggestions each, with author named, then I'll get started on randomising the list and creating a schedule for this.

By the way, I would ask that people avoid massive long-running series when making suggestions. I know we're all grown-up and mature, but I'd prefer to avoid any possible fandom rabidity and it would keep things fresher for other readers. The first in a trilogy is as long a series as I would suggest for this book club.

I'd also try and recommend staying away from big name books (i.e. ones that everyone has already read/heard of), just to make things more interesting.

My own suggestions will be:

- Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
- Battle Royale by Takami Koshun
