Before you begin to read the rest of this please remember that I posted this in the off topic topic, as I wait for my brother I type. I am aware that I am skipping/ignoring a lot. I am just ‘thinking out loud’. Feel free to comment or mock as you see fit. This is a rambling process, a first draft which should never really have seen the light of day, but by some miscarriage of literary justice, did so anyway.

It is interesting to note that if you meet an infant’s physical need only, such as food, warmth, nappy changes etc but never give it affection the result will be a very dysfunctional adult. I do not believe that displays of affection towards your own children are socially enforced or are by any other outside means compelled upon you. I have no kids so I cannot speak from personal experience but from every encounter with any parents I have ever met I know that they have a feeling towards their kids that they can only describe as love.
Why? Why do they love them? Babies are loud, smelly and entirely useless for about 3-5 years when they become only marginally useful. (In a purely work input related way)
Is it a natural instinct to protect ones genetic heritage? Perhaps, but what about those who are obviously ‘unfit’ are they loved any less? Not that I noticed. Then again I am looking on as a product from a M.D.C. who is well educated, single and healthy. As well as having a western cultures world view (Island mentality to be specific) combined with a strong Judo-Christian belief. So my view is coloured to say the least.
Why do children love their parents? Is it out of a sense of obligation? Are we conditioned to do so? Is it because they loved us so we love them? An easier question to ask could be why do I love my parents? I think that I will not give the cop-out “I do not know, I just do” and actually try to answer that one.

A hard one to answer, why? One of the reasons is I suppose that I know that they love me. No matter what I do, regardless of where I go or who I become I know that to be a basic fact. A fundamental foundation in my life to date. Oh yes I know that I can lose their respect, disgust them, take actions that would be fundamentally opposed to their sensibilities, (for one of them I already have) abuse there hospitality and kindness so much so that I would no longer be allowed to enter their house, the list is as long as my possible choices, but lose their love? No, I do not think so. While I am uncomfortably aware that disease may take their mind, I know that while they are still ‘them’ that they will love me. But is this reason enough for me to love them? Is this the only foundation of my love for them? If we take the disease example above and assume that they are no longer who I once knew, will I abandon them to their fate? Since I have yet to experience such a thing and cannot say “No, I did not”, you will have to take my word when I say “No, I would not”.
Then why else? Why else should I love them? Ha I think I found a flaw in that question and that is the word –should-. I do not have to. This I feel is important as forcing me to feel love would be, and has been a futile exercise. But my freedom to love is not a valid excuse as I have that freedom towards anyone but I do not exercise it towards everyone.
I could argue that I have seen their displays of affection in sacrifices made or actions taken but that is merely a symptom of their love rather than a reason for mine, in the end I come to the conclusion that I cannot tell you why I just do, a copout I know, but then, love has never been easy to explain and that is why we leave it to the poets, singers, writers and painters (artists basically) who are the only ones arrogant? Brave? Willing? enough to try.

Wow that was certainly not what I set out to write. But I am not too surprised as I had no plan in mind when I started and so I wandered. Personally, I blame the key board.
