Emptiness, it is not the right answer but it is my guess. This is why.

Think of an empty room, it is empty before you got there when you go it will be empty again but while you are there it is not empty, ‘empty’ does not exist (Your are there after all)
If you search for emptiness then you will never find it as you will always be wherever you search.

I am fairly confident that I have worked out the ‘why’ of the riddle just not the actual answer. I can’t think of the word. Switch empty out for the correct answer and you should have it.

Before you I was = before you came/arrived/whatever, you where absent
After you are gone I will be again = When you go there will once again be your absence
As long as you search I'm nowhere to be found. = You can never find your own absence.

As entertaining as your guess’s are in regards to who I am, what I am and my likeness to kittens, it does not comply with the riddle thread rules. Unless by popular opinion the riddle ‘What or who is anthrax?’ is allowed, I submit this as the next riddle, enjoy. This riddle is courtesy of my cousin.
