We're Still Dying in Afghanistan, an op-ed piece from the Globe and Mail by a former Russian soldier comparing his experience in Afghanistan in the '80s with our current entanglements. Okay kindof a snippet rather than a link, but a link's included ^_^
| Quote: | After no university philosophy department successfully reached a series of funding benchmarks applicable under the latest Federal funding criteria, Australian universities will remove the subject from their curriculum next year. A study by the Australian Vice Chancellors’ Committee found that the nation’s philosophy departments had raised thousands of questions over the year, but had not succeeding in answering any of them conclusively.
“To have a 100% fail rate on your answer rate is unacceptable under our latest result-oriented guidelines,” said Ken Williams of the AVCC audit committee. “Without definitive progress to show the government, we lose funding.”
[...]
Williams said that some of the former lecturers shared part of the blame for their departments’ inability to justify their funding. “For instance, when we asked the ANU Philosophy Department why it should continue to exist, its staff merely asked us how we knew any of us existed.”
“Well, at least that’s one philosophical conundrum that’s been answered,” he commented. “As of now, they don’t exist.”

More for your funny pictures type sites that consume your time, Nem:

I guess it might be objectionable to the highly sensitive, but how can you get angry when it's JUST SO DURN CUTE! Awwww, who wubs the happy plane? I do! I do! XD
I need sleep.
Edit: Still no sleep, lots of webcrawling instead. I always gravitate toward science blogs in the end, and I'm just too fascinated to turn off the laptop!
Here's a really fantastically interesting technology:
http://gajitz.com/pocket-size-power-potent-penny-sized-nuclear-battery/
I've also seen spray-on solar panels, greenhouses intended for the moon, mice grown from adult mouse skin cells (and not stem cells, which is a HUGE step forward for biological science), and a LOT of other really neat stuff. Truth be told, it's really hard to not believe Sci-Fi will become reality in a short time. _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

It already has.
Self opening doors and personal communicators from ‘star track’ are unremarkable realties today. Cars with phones are common, compared to the time when James Bond made a phone call from his submarine car. All of theses where fantastically futuristic when they where conceived.
Through out most of history you could take anyone out of their time period and dump them into another and expect them to be able to grasp the fundamentals of that eras progress without to much difficulty.
Someone from 1910 directly dumped into 2010 would find a virtually unbelievable new world. How would they be able to understand mobile phones, the internet, common air travel, rectangle plastic cards that allow you to buy goods with out paper money? (even plastic) etc.
We live at a time when scientific advancement has never been faster in so many areas at the same time, Vinel, tapes, CD’s, how long did each one last? What is the most common form of music listening device in the west today? Would anyone in the 1950's be able to grasp the concept of digital storage devices? What about wireless internet. Your mobile computing engines do not need a hard wire access point to talk to others of its kind?
Just because we live in it does not mean today is not sci-fi. One of the reasons I love Firefly is that they treat their tec as normal, its used and abused. Much like I do to my long suffering phone.
DAM, I could have made an interesting story for writers group 10 out of the above. *Sighs* typical.
Edit: Counterargument. How can it be science fiction if its science fact? _________________ "He gave you a life and you should cherish that treasure." - Benny

Because science fiction hasn't happened yet. When it has, then it's cool new technology. When it's cool new technology, it's not on science blogs, it's on ThinkGeek.com.
More links, since I've inspired a reply so far. I swear, I'm going to bed... er, soon. >_>
A project to capture High Resolution images of Mars. Simply phenomenal, if you ask me!

This, and nanotechnology, are the two things I look forward to most. I don't want to replace my parts with machine parts, but I certainly don't mind augmenting my sensory input and adding the ability to repair my body in real-time. Anyway, linkage:

Then again, BattleTech isn't far off, if they're going in this route:

And one more, just for the geek interest of it all:

Okay, okay, bed time, before someone finds me out and chases me off with a stick. ^^; _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

I wouldn't mind having a computer implant as far as cybernetic go, though I think the necessary tech would be quite a way off.

So how's it sound in German? Why is that embarrassing for an English speaker? _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^
