Truth be told, it's really hard to not believe Sci-Fi will become reality in a short time.

It already has.
Self opening doors and personal communicators from ‘star track’ are unremarkable realties today. Cars with phones are common, compared to the time when James Bond made a phone call from his submarine car. All of theses where fantastically futuristic when they where conceived.
Through out most of history you could take anyone out of their time period and dump them into another and expect them to be able to grasp the fundamentals of that eras progress without to much difficulty.
Someone from 1910 directly dumped into 2010 would find a virtually unbelievable new world. How would they be able to understand mobile phones, the internet, common air travel, rectangle plastic cards that allow you to buy goods with out paper money? (even plastic) etc.
We live at a time when scientific advancement has never been faster in so many areas at the same time, Vinel, tapes, CD’s, how long did each one last? What is the most common form of music listening device in the west today? Would anyone in the 1950's be able to grasp the concept of digital storage devices? What about wireless internet. Your mobile computing engines do not need a hard wire access point to talk to others of its kind?
Just because we live in it does not mean today is not sci-fi. One of the reasons I love Firefly is that they treat their tec as normal, its used and abused. Much like I do to my long suffering phone.
DAM, I could have made an interesting story for writers group 10 out of the above. *Sighs* typical.
Edit: Counterargument. How can it be science fiction if its science fact?
