EDIT:
Here are the details of the ES forumers who are playing, and where to find them:
http://meliogeny.net/es-forum-dnd-details.html
I added everyone that we have full details for at this time. If you've created a character, post the DnD name, character class, and your time zone in this thread and I'll add them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So recently I came across an article on Ars Technica entitled Dungeons and Dragons Online: behold the power of free, reporting that the Dungeons and Dragons Online MMO can now be acquired and played entirely for free:
| Ars Technica wrote: | | Here's how it works. Anyone can download the client and create a character and start playing. As you level up, you can buy everything from hair dye to new adventures and dungeons using Turbine points, which can be bought with either real money or earned in the game. You can still subscribe, which gets you more character slots and a monthly allotment of Turbine points, as well as some other perks. |
So I downloaded it and tried it (I've never played an MMO 'cause I didn't want to pay monthly fees). It's not bad.
So far I've been going solo, but maybe we could get together a few forumites and go dungeon delving. I'll play the rogue! _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli

I've never played an MMO - or anything remotely close to D&D, actually. >>;
It could be fun - as long as we don't end up looking like an episode of The Guild. XD _________________ Keeper of Gaia and all the books on Earthsong

I played D&D once in highschool on a school trip with a room full of boys till past 3 a.m. Best experience of my life. Although it helped that our dungeon master was ridiculously hilarious. Especially when he started lacking sleep.
I think I played a rouge then... I'm up for such a thing, although I don't really remember how it works so you know... I'd have to do the whole learning thing again.
And come on Tinu, it would be amazingly hilarious, but I warn you all now, I do have jobs. _________________ I can't remember....oh *le sigh* |

If we end up looking like an episode of the guild, I'll be even MORE geared up for this.
Sure, I'll give it a whirl. I'm not likely to be on when you all are, when I start back to work I'll be on LATE at night (midnight or later), or before work (2-3 Eastern). Still, I'll play.
...right now I'm without a monitor though, so it's going to be a little bit yet. _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

Ah, memories of Neverwinter Nights... that was fun. I should really get my act together (in the distant future) and finish playing that game.
If we could pick a set time... I could probably arrange to do this, though I'm pretty noobish when it comes to D&D. _________________ Keeper of Nanashi's Vambraces and the Amethyst Trees.

You don't need really uber-detailed knowledge of D&D in order to play. You're free to customize your character if you like, but you could also pick one of several pre-made packages that take care of most of the details for you. Beyond that, it's more or less like playing any other game.
Here's a basic primer.
The first thing you pick is your class, which defines what skill set you'll be developing and what role you play in the party. The possible classes are:
Melee Combatants
Barbarian - wears light armor, uses big sharp weapons, gets angry easily, and tends to run around yelling things like "THROK SMASH!!1!"
Fighter - The name says it all: wears any kind of armor, uses any kind of weapons, and tends to be at the front in the thick of combat. Typical quote: "Taste my steel, villain!"
Paladin - A righteous warrior for Good, verily. Wears any kind of armor, uses any kind of weapons, emits an "Aura of Good" which is definitely not B.O. because it smells too nice and gives bonuses to anyone in range. Paladins eventually learn to cast a small number of spells, primarily healing, blessing, and anti-undead spells. Typical quote: "To the abyss with thee, minion of evil!"
Spell Casters
Cleric - A priest or priestess of some god or goddess. Wears heavy armor, uses bludgeoning weapons like a mace, and casts lots of spells, especially healing spells. Vital for keeping everybody alive and in good health. Clerics can also wade into melee combat, though they're not as effective at it as barbarians, fighters, or paladins. Typical quote: "Again? But I just healed you!"
Sorcerer - A spell caster. Cannot wear armor, so it's vital that they stay out of melee combat as much as possible. Sometimes they carry bows or crossbows, but usually they depend on their magic for blasting things. Sorcerers can only cast a limited number of spells, but they can cast them frequently, which makes them good for specializing in combat magic. Typical quote: "Let's burn it!"
Wizard - A spell caster. Like Sorcerer, in that they can't use armor, stay out of combat, and rely on their magic. Unlike sorcerer, they can learn to cast a huge variety of spells. The drawback is that they can cast a fewer number of spells per day, and have to choose which spells to prepare for the coming day each time they rest. Typical quote: "Hum, ah, I know I wrote that spell down somewhere ... ah, here it is, FIREBALL!"
Specialists
Rogue - Your basic subtle sort. Specializes in opening locks, finding and disarming traps, and finding hidden doors. Also very good at scouting. Wears light armor and uses light weapons. Not a front-line combatant, but capable of mixing it up as needed, especially with a fighter or someone to take point. Typical quote: "Don't step on ... I bet that stings, huh?"
Ranger - Master (or Mistress) of the wilds. Good at tracking and scouting. Wears light armor, and uses most weapons. Think Aragorn. Rangers are capable combatants, but tend to specialize either in archery or fighting with two weapons, because their class has bonuses for those two options. Also gets bonuses against "favored enemies" that they've studied in particular. If you choose this class, pick "Favored Enemy: Undead", which is by far the most useful one to have. Typical quote: "They passed this way, traveling north, about two hours since. Follow me!"
Monk - A divine warrior specializing in unarmed combat. Does not wear armor or use weapons, but gets a ton of bonuses that make up for that, making them a decent melee combatant. Cannot cast spells. Typical quote: "Have you learned nothing from the lesson of Ed Gruberman?"
Bard - A jack of all trades. Can cast some spells, can pick locks, can sing encouraging songs which give bonuses to other party members. Wears light armor and is tolerably decent at combat if forced into it. This is a complicated class, and not recommended for beginners. Typical quote: "♫ Kill, kill, kill the nasty ogres! ♫"
The installer can be downloaded here:

Unless you're on a really slow connection, I recommend taking the time to download the version with the high quality textures. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Ok I lied, I just spent the night downloading the thing so I may as well make use of it. Any particular class you want me to go, something useful to a group. I was thinking cleric but I am happy out being a big old meat shield as well. _________________ "He gave you a life and you should cherish that treasure." - Benny

I've got a rogue character all ready to go.
I'm inclined to think that we'd be best advised to pick a time on a weekend, or a Friday evening. People have school/work/life to attend to during the week.*
How does Friday evening sound? And what time zones are we all in? I'm in Denver, so MST. We can use the world clock meeting planner to figure out what time slots work.

Installing now....
And I like MST... mainly cause that's waht I'm on too. I would say eveningish... like 9:30/10ish..., but that's just me, I'm also not opposed to early mornings.
Oh and how did I know catch that?

The joke is lost on me.
I am good almost any night time to early moring (it is 5.00am at the mo and a monday night for example) and most early mornings. No days please. For slot times my city is Dublin. Just finished loading the thing, man it looks epic. Now I will go to bed. _________________ "He gave you a life and you should cherish that treasure." - Benny
