I've never trusted the built-in ground sheets since one of them leaked on me. Though to be honest, I tend not to use tents much either -- just a sleeping bag and a tarp. If it comes on to rain I wrap the sleeping bag in the tarp, like a burrito. One of these days I'll have to break down and get a proper bivy bag.

And I too carry a pocketknife. Swiss Army, super tinker model. It's got a good sensible mix of tools, no weird attachments like magnifying glasses or anything. And I put it in checked luggage after that time I forgot to do so in Minneapolis and had to mail it to myself (expensive!) before they'd let me through security.

Mine's only a simple three-bladed one I got out of my grandfather's collection.

My family calls those bivy bags 'pup tents'. And we have one; it's what my brother used to use, after my dad stopped using it.

We're a big believer in passing things down, I guess.

In my lexicon, a pup tent is a very small tent which only just fits one sleeping bag; the tent and the bag are two separate objects.

Whereas a bivy bag is a sleeping bag with a tent permanently attached to it -- they're actually a single item serving both purposes.

Oh. Okay. I was going by a simple glance at the pictures, so I guess we're talking about the same thing. Sorry!
