For a mere $3,300, you too can have the privilege of owning a laptop with:
- Two hard drives (in a RAID configuration)
- Both a touchpad AND one of those little red trackpoint sticks
- An integrated Wacom tablet
- A fingerprint reader
- Two different kinds of flash card readers
- A built in color correction sensor for adjusting the monitor colors
- Not one but TWO screens, including a little pop-out one on the side
- Tons more stuff most people will never want or need
Here's a video tour. It has to be seen to be believed.
Of course, it weighs 11 pounds, which would make lugging it around somewhat impractical. On the other hand, it sucks down so much powers that it can only go 39 minutes per battery charge, so you're probably not likely to actually want to carry it around anyway. It might make a good portable toaster, though. Just clamp the lid down on appropriate ingredients and you too can make a grilled cheese sandwich with your laptop!
I'm sure there's a market for these somewhere. Maybe professional graphics designers who want something to replace their desktop that they can take to meetings (as long as the meeting room has enough electrical outlets). It's just a very small market, is all. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

If you create a hopelessly over-gageted piece of technology... they will come.
Heck, I know someone who's got one of those fridges with the tv in the door. Jeez. _________________ Keeper of Nanashi's Vambraces and the Amethyst Trees.

I'd be drooling if I wasn't on a fixed income.
This reminds me of when I was searching for my new computer. I got bored and decided to play the "let's see how expensive we can make it" game. I think I got a nice gaming computer up to twelve thousand dollars. _________________ "Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. ...I don't think I have ever seen a laptop with a built-in second screen o_O
I also suspect you could get a better, lighter desktop for less money... _________________ Keeper of Tristram's rings, and Felucca's very expressive ears. |

Having a secondary monitor could be really helpful. Check out this seven inch USB-powered touchscreen monitor that I saw on Gizmodo recently. I can see how that would be really handy, especially for graphic designers. You could put all your tools palettes and whatnot off on the little touchscreen, and leave your main monitor to deal with nothing but the image you're working on. And any other similar situation, where you've got something that you need open but want out of the way.
Or you could use it as a secondary monitor for, say, running a movie while you're working on something. Assuming you're one of those rare people who can actually get something done while a movie is running in front of you. ^_^ _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

I don't deny the utility =P
Though i would say it's not quite as useful as they make out, from my perspective - I have a double-screen setup for artwork, but the tablet interacts oddly when it extends over a very wide screen, and it makes drawing difficult. I tend to reserve the second screen for reference purposes, since I have to have the tablet pen set to recognise only the main screen.
Touchscreen monitors are somethign i'd dearly like, though - I wants me a wacom cintiq monitor/tablet. Or a smart whiteboard =D _________________ Keeper of Tristram's rings, and Felucca's very expressive ears. |

I'm having a seriously hard time coming up with a scenario in which a graphic designer or artist (of any kind) would need all of their fancy high-end shiny technology bits, like the tablet and the second monitor and the second HD, in a mobile format in the first place... _________________ I do commissions!

Most people moving house don't need to do it with the computer in their backpack _________________ Keeper of Tristram's rings, and Felucca's very expressive ears. |

I think this is sort of an exhibition machine, "look what we can put into a laptop!" type of thing.
Also, a laptop can fold away and slide into a corner when you need actual space. A desktop stays on the desktop, taking up room. SO this isn't a laptop, it's a notebook. Also, you can work wherever your cord reaches, rather than only a desk. _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

Because this computer is so insane, I'm going to say that's just an added fitness feature. _________________ My printer thinks it's some kinda guitar hero because it won't stop jamming.

I'm willing to wager than anyone who can afford a machine like that can afford the space to devote to a more energy-efficient desktop setup.
And really, 11 pounds? I'm pretty sure my imac doesn't even weight that much... _________________ I do commissions!

*whines* It's cheaper than the laptop I want (if the laptop was maxed out). <.<
Alienware M17
The base price for this laptop is pumped up about $700 more than it should be, but the base price is nothing compared to the price for the setup that I intend to get.
For the specs I want: $3,169, or a bit less than $200 short of that laptop. For maxed specs? $4,109. Umm... ouch.
Edit: Okay, I lied. That notebook is almost twice as pricey as mine. I didn't look at the maxed specs of the 39 minute junk, obviously. <.<
