Well it was either call the greenback an ensign or a foot soldier, but that one seemed a little archaic for the time period

Any better suggestions for what rank the fresh-out-of-boot-camp military personnel should have?

Ensign is a naval rank. You're probably looking for Private if they're just your standard footslogger or Lieutenant if they're commissioned straight out of boot as an officer.

If, on the other hand, they're an NCO, (non-commissioned officer,) I.E. a soldier that's been granted some responsibility by the higher ups without being made an officer; then they'll probably be a sergeant.
