@Tinu: Actually, I think Obama volunteered to take the oath again, just to make sure there were no naysayers in regards to it. His first day in office was actually incredibly busy, and bodes well for the rest of his term (IMO).

Looking good so far. I'm almost daring to hope...

Finally. I'm a little worried what will happen to the guilty people, but the innocent now have a ray of hope, though their fate is far from certain.

That's the hard part, isn't it? Sorting out the guilty from the innocent. I figure they're going to have to review each case, and then either charge the detainees with crimes and try them in a court of law, or else let them go.

And it'll take a while to get the place shut down, too. Months, at least, more likely over a year. Dealing with legal stuff takes ages, especially with complicated international law.

Wow, Obama's acting fast with Gitmo... first calling off all tribunals only hours after his inauguration, and now starting the (unfortunately long and grueling, as Tin said) process of shutting the operation down in its entirety, including the overseas branches.

Of course I myself have no idea whether his swiftness will end up being a good thing or a bad thing, but either way I'm impressed by the way he skipped right over all the political posturing and BS to go diving headfirst into the actual business of his new position.

I'm going to have to agree wholeheartedly. I think that Obama's move could be seen politically as well, more I think about it. There are a lot of "liberal republicans" (myself included) that agree with almost all of the Democratic Party's views and plans, but some core values still rest with the Republicans. For him to make an act like closing Gitmo, that shows a lot of desire to actually get things done.

I can't name a single person who isn't tired of political posturing in Washington. I'm glad that Obama is making good on his promise of change, as this certainly is a wonderful change. So far, I'm impressed and happy. We'll see how well he's doing after a year.

If he continues along this route though, it's going to make the president in eight years look like a total slouch. Wink

I wouldn't say that - I don't know who would vote for her. I think she'll get kicked out during the primaries.

*shrug* Probably, but I doubt she'd really run. It was more a joke about the robot uprising.

...Which, I just realised, has socio-political implications.

I dunno, Palin seems pretty determined. I wouldn't be surprised if she ran.

And I bet she'd make it through the primaries. Palin appeals to strongly conservative Republicans, and those are the types who are most active during primary season. The same is true of Democrats -- the most strongly liberal ones dominate the primaries.

She might have an uphill battle on her hands (because she's so closely associated with McCain's defeat last fall) but I bet she'd make it through the primaries. But I rather doubt she could win an election based on the full population rather than a self-selected conservative sub-set of them.

I think I was getting a little bitter with American politics and whatnot, becuase I was not too pleased with Bush. Even then though, I didnt know him too well, especially how the public portray him. Even so, with my limited knowledge of the whole situation, I'm excited that there is (finally) a new president, regardless of who he is.
