Apparently the Motion Picture Association of America wants Obama to pressure Canada to crack down on movie piracy.

This article is worth it entirely for the modified Canadian flag half way down the page. YAR! XD

y'know, after seeing that flag I find myself wanting to cheer Canada's piracy on. I mean really now, anyone will tell you that when it comes to a country, it's the flag that matters in the end. No flag, no country, after all.

And yes, I can't really take this article seriously after the flag.

I find many American institutions laughable, the MPAA taking the award for biggest group of conservative dummies mostly because it is a conservative group in control of the biggest source of liberalism. I find irony very amusing, don't you?

Now Playing: Bad Religion - Glassjaw
(for some reason I don't think this is actually a BR song, or if it is, it's a b-side track. Doesn't sound like the singer, and the singing style is very different. hmmm *looks up Glassjaw on Google*)

This be Claen'tor, signing off.

Shocked

....

We need to change our flag to this! AWESOME!

XD Ah, well, the thing is that in Canada, it's actually LEGAL to download these materials (at least music, not so sure about movies,tv, etc) - we pay a tax on writable CDs that goes to the entertainment industry to compensate them for it. Although "tax" isn't really accurate - it's built right into the cost.

(Or at least that's my understanding of it - I haven't looked it up in a long time)

My dream is to go to Somalia and become a pirate, unfortunately, the closest I will probably get to that is downloading illegal movies and songs, oh well. Sad

EDIT: That is a cool flag, I will definitely show my canadian friend that.

You really should. All the other flags outside the UN building would get all jealous and catty. ^_^

EDIT: And just 'cause I could, I've made an SVG version of the flag. Now I can generate new copies at any size with no loss of quality. Very Happy

And that's exactly why Canada is on the hit list of the Motion Picture Association and the Recording Industry Association. They cannot allow countries to make it legal to download music/movies from the Net; or at any rate, they believe that they can't allow it. Free downloads threaten their business model, and so they're busily doing everything in their power to stop them. In this case, that means they want the U.S. government to use trade policy to pressure Canada (and several other countries) to adopt and enforce much more restrictive copyright laws.

Which is pretty much par for the course. The recording industries routinely try to kill any technology which they can't control with an iron fist. Ask Edwin Howard Armstrong.

It does rather undermine its effectiveness, doesn't it? If you pay attention to just the words, they're presenting it in a fairly serious manner -- the flag doesn't fit the tone of the article. Which is a shame, because it is an important issue.

Happily, I don't think the Obama administration is likely to dance to the MPAA's tune. Did you see that they put the entire contents of change.gov under a Creative Commons license? The Creative Commons people are more or less the sworn enemies of restrictive copyright laws. I therefore find the Obama team's use of a CC license heartening.

TV advertising alone costs a presidental campaign in the US billions of dollars and the people selling that advertising space and controlling what is said in the news broadcasts are an increasingly focused group within society. People with a lot of money and power, I.E. big business, put politicians in power and if they care to be able to run for reelection they're going to do largely what the people with money tell them to do. No matter the station politicians only get to flex their political muscles within certain limits, money runs the country. Money from people like the MPAA. In Nem's experience of politics this sort of thing is like buying a house, this is the MPAA's asking price. The interesting question is what else can go on or off the table, what the MPAA is really selling, and whether the MPAA is just going to get awesomely stubbed ^_^

Well with all the political nonsense going on up here, I doubt that any action would be taken even if the Obama administration did try to pressure us into cracking down on piracy.

We're facing a potential coalition government right now (an Liberal/New Democrat/Bloc Quebecois coalition= super liberal, almost Socialist in some aspects); I think movie piracy is the least of our worries at the present.

Besides, the general consensus in the Toronto film industry on piracy is "If you like the film, please buy it so that the people who made it can make more films you may like. If you don't like the film, then delete it and block it from your memory. We don't need more bad reviews." We're chill like that. ^__^

Watch out, the EU's gonna getcha!

There was a good quote somewhere about music and the internet - it went something along the lines of, "The record companies had just figured the perfect way to control everything, then the internet comes along and messes everything up." I believe it was then followed by the quoter sticking up their middle finger and waving it around in the air. Forget who, though.

WOW! I would be very happy if that became our new flag!!

Sometimes I wonder if all this is going to pass. When cassette tapes and personal recorders first came out, there was a lot of fuss about people recordings songs from the radio for their own listening pleasure. Scandalous! (No wonder the US is still at odds with Cuba - apparently Cubans covet cassettes for this.)

In the long run, the music industry will either adapt or die and get replaced with something else. Ditto for the movie industry. I'm just mad about all the damage their reactionary thrashing is causing in the meantime.

That last quote sounds like something you would see on Nation States . . . and the flag is awesome.
