Well, it took a while longer than expected, but we're back and fixed to boot! Now then, page comments: yay for panel 5! And now for a TVTropes link to expain why yay for panel 5: clicky
Also, does Bel's lair have another entrance somewhere, or do bigger Mandragoras just have to get very squished?
Oo! Perhaps he has someone whose power is to shrink stuff!
Maybe Morgan? Has her power ever been revealed before?

Tetris, that post was all over the place.
At least we know that the entrance really is narrow, not just poorly drawn.
Can't wait for the next page!

Hey! Gimme a break! And technically, it's not a sound effect anyhow. I just didn't want to do motion lines. I hate doing motion lines. I'm no good at them.

Tyris' post kinda reminded me of No need for Bushido. That comic's got lots and lots of un-sound effects like "Grab", "Kneed" and "Fallover" written in its panels.
The best in-comic variant so far was "Ninja Vanish!"
The creators also offer(ed) a couple of older pages without any text on them for fans to "re-synch". One of those re-creations actually contains the effect: "Soundeffect!". _________________

I don't see why you hate backgrounds so much Lady, you pull them off so well! You even put in a lot of detail in your work even if you know the size of the picture will turn out really small. I know I wouldn't *nervous laugh*
Jack: Wow, I'd watch a cartoon that looked that good...*ponders* you know...so would being an earthsong cartoon! Mwa! If the creators of the cartoon didn't ruin it that is.

Backgrounds are one of those things that people rarely pay much attention to.
You notice them when somebody explicitly calls attention to them.
And you notice them when they're not there, or drawn poorly.
Lady's gotten a lot better at backgrounds since she started drawing this comic, because when the backgrounds were absent or sketchy, people often complained. But when she devotes a lot of time to them, people rarely mention them. Plus I think she's just not terribly interested in drawing objects rather than people. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

I can TOTALLY relate to the dislike of backgrounds, for pretty much the reason Tin stated about being much more interested in drawing the figures instead. It just tends to happen that figures look a lot better when they're positioned in something other than dead space _________________ I do commissions!

Funny. I've never been much of an artist, but when I took drawing classes, I always liked drawing objects better than drawing people. They're a lot easier to get right. Still life is the only thing I ever did that was any good -- any time I tried people, they came out looking as though they suffered from encephalitis, or other severe congenital defects.
I'd probably have gotten better if I'd actually kept drawing. But I decided to go off and master other things instead. These days, they only drawing I ever do are thumbnail sketches of web site layouts. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

It's not that backgrounds are more or less boring, IMO, it's that they require more thought and detail. And when you've just finished the main thing, you're like, "... NO." _________________ Dubbed Pants by AsA, via the way of the electric pants. |

Actually, Tin, you'd be surprised at how often people don't notice when there's no background. Some of the most successful visual novels and comics have little-to-no background. Sometimes, when the figures are what matter, having too detailed a background is distracting, so a simple background is a must. Often the best backgrounds are a simple gradient, or even just no background at all. There's also nothing worse than a BAD background...it distracts from what may otherwise be something great going on the foreground. It's honestly all about how well the artist is with composition...
That said, the Lady's backgrounds are neither distracting nor bad, and work well. |

@ Tin - most people have a subject matter they prefer when it comes to art. That's how you wind up with landscape artists and portraitists, or the members of the American Society of Botanical Artists _________________ I do commissions!

It's actually a little bit of everything Tin mentioned.
Despite my preference for character drawing, I spend forever on the backgrounds to make sure that they're right (ie don't stick out like a sore thumb) and then if I actually manage to pull that off, they're generally not even noticed... which is kind of the point, but still irritating nonetheless. Yes, I would like to have my cake and eat it too.
Even Sarah Ellerton's backgrounds, which are absolutely beautiful, can get glazed over when you're reading the comic. I know I do it myself.
Backgrounds are the bane of many a comic artist's existance. It's different when it's a one-off background for a piece of art... but you have keep drawing and drawing and drawing them over and over for comics. The time adds up and so does the whining.
And thus concludes my rant for the day. _________________ Keeper of Nanashi's Vambraces and the Amethyst Trees.

"They say time is the fire in which we burn. Right now, Captain, my time is running out."
I could be wrong, but I figure it's more likely the Lady is referencing that than the poem. ^_^
Very nice use of orange in the page (and also eye panels), though I must say that I liked the old kissyface better. >_> |
