I think you could just say `Geocities`and leave it at that. But that`s just me.
As for their `worst`picks, I can`t say that I entirely agree with them... in that I`ve definitely seen worse. Don`t ask me where though - I try not to remember. _________________ Keeper of Nanashi's Vambraces and the Amethyst Trees.

Not the worst I've seen. Few were allright, if not graphically creative.

They're all dreadful abominations of interface design but I can use them, wouldn't want to though. _________________ Never forget,

I am not a fan of the new Buzzcomix design.
And some of those sights are eye wrenching. Ow. _________________ Britland as dubbed by AsA

The one for moire graphics actually scared me, the CUH2A amused me making it make plinky plunky noises, and the CHEAP STUDENT REMOVAL TAXI VAN COMPANY MAN AND VAN DRIVER HIRE UK was just plain funny. I think the one which made me really appreciate the bad design was the last however, purely for the last line on the page.

Anything pure flash, and anything image-based when the images are not appropriately alt-texted and titled. You shouldn't need a plugin in order to navigate a website. _________________ Keeper of Tristram's rings, and Felucca's very expressive ears. |

I use the Dokimos.org/ajff one in class as an example of how not to do it. First I check to see if there are any epileptics in the room, though, and tell them to avert their gaze because it flashes so badly. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Lady: I have to agree with you on that one . Man I think anyone I know here would wretch at the sight of my old website when I was 12, which was a geocities one.
Mirf: I was, and I'm pretty sure the dude was keeping in mind ease of use of the site, practicality, function when he came up with those lists. And I'm pretty sure any site that is totally in flash is way overboard. I've also seen worse, and I have to agree the first ones were pretty, but I wouldn't want to be the poor sap who actually had to navigate through that thing to find something relatively meaningful to what they were searching for.
Alli: I didn't actually read through that site yet, but I wonder at the professionalism of that taxi company .
Space: Or any of those sites that say "best viewed with..." Well sheez, shows just how flexible these web designers are. But I shouldn't talk. If I had a website it would be simple and plain. Maybe too plain. But at least it would be viewable anywhere.
Tin: If I was epiletic, I think I would be afraid of surfing the net because I might stumble upon something like those sites. Even some of those ads or pop-ups now are really hideously flashy. _________________ Yo.

Back in the days of IE6, the best viewed with signs were often necessary, since IE6 could not cope, as browsers ought to be able to, with .png transparency. Thus, any site which made any use of such had to have a best viewed with notifier. That aside, I agree. _________________ Keeper of Tristram's rings, and Felucca's very expressive ears. |

Definitely not the worst that Squee has seen. In fact, the first 4 represent the evil days of Flash "designers" and their quest to find the worst interactive menu ever. They're what really caused people to hate Flash (even though when used correctly is a GREAT tool). But, these are certainly not the worst that Squee's seen (though one or two are close). At least they have visual appeal for the most part.
The latter half are pretty bad, though again, Squee has seen quite a few even worse, though generally along the same lines. That usability one is particularly ironic...though doesn't really belong on a worst design list, just a poor one. |

Only a very small proportion of the epileptic population actually suffer photosensitive epilepsy (seizures when exposed to flashing things), as I understand it. Back in 1997 an episode of Pokemon came out which had flashing backgrounds in one section at the right frequency; out of all the Japanese children watching it, only about 618 suffered seizures. There had to have been hundreds of thousands (or millions) of children watching, so, while there are still plenty of people like that out there, they form a pretty small proportion of the species as a whole.
For those who do suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, there are ways of reducing the likelihood of coming across dangerous material.
1) A lot of the animation stuff on the web is done using Flash. So, either don't install Flash, or else use something like Flashblock, a Firefox extension which replaces Flash movies with a "Play" button. That way if it's something that you want, like, say, a Youtube video or something, you can click "Play", but the annoying flashing look-at-me-right-now advertisements that line so many sites never play.
2) The other major source of moving/flashing things on the web is animated GIF files. So, disable images. That's the nuclear option, of course, and can cause more problems than it solves, but it works in every browser. In Firefox, you can take the more elegant approach of disabling the animation in animated GIFs. Thus: Start a new tab; type "about:config" in the location bar, click "I'll be careful, promise!", type "anim" into the filter box, right-click "image.animation_mode", pick "modify" and set it to "none". After you've done that, Firefox will stop animating animated GIFs. Instead it'll just show the first frame in the animation and stop.
With those two counter-measures in place, even the dokimos.org/ajff site doesn't move. The design is still pretty eye-twisting, but it doesn't move. I use both of these techniques even though I'm not epileptic, just because I find flashy jumpy things annoying.
Lately we've begun getting more JavaScript based motion and stuff. Dealing with that is a lot more tricky, but on the other hand so far I haven't seen any effects done with JavaScript which seem likely to trigger photosensitive epileptic seizures. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Some teachers would enjoy that, I think...
I loved scrolling over those names on the Moiré site, trying to give my computer epilepsy.
Some flash websites are really nice. The T2 site comes to mind.
I also challenge anyone with too much time on their hands to find a well-designed high school website. _________________ Dubbed Pants by AsA, via the way of the electric pants. |

That Moiré site, with the flashing colors? Anyone else feel like they're watching the llama subtitles from the beginning to Monty Python Quest for the Holy Grail? _________________ If you're reading this, you haven't quite made it to the next post. |
