Actually, if you talk to the various fire services, they'll tell you that their policy is to let wildfires go...IF they're not threatening buildings. This policy came about after discovery that wildfires are necessary. So, when you hear about wildfire containment during fire season...you need to remember they're generally working ahead of the fires near property lines, not trying to put the fires out. Unfortunately, more and more wilderness areas are being populated by homes, cabins, utility buildings, etc., so this creates a heavy toll on firefighters and the environment. It's the same reason hurricanes are far more costly now: more people on the earth, and more living in hurricane areas.
This type of fire sensor helps them track fires so they can contain them as necessary...but it won't be something they're going to use to snuff out fires quickly. |

There's also the fact that our long-time policy of preventing forest fires completely means that there are a lot of forests that have way too much loose fuel -- downed branches, snags, heavy underbrush, etc. -- so that when a fire DOES get started, it has a tendency to burn hard. In an area that's had regular fires, often the fire will pass by at ground level and never jump up into the crowns of the trees. But when you've got accumulations of dead branches, lots of high brush and low-hanging branches, it's much easier for a fire to get up into the upper branches. Leads to much worse fires. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

We have horrid bushfires every summer and they just seem to be forever getting worse...
But I blame drought and climate change. ¬_¬ Boo. _________________ Dubbed Pants by AsA, via the way of the electric pants. |

If this ever does happen, I foresee a lot of electrocuted squirrels in our future. _________________ My printer thinks it's some kinda guitar hero because it won't stop jamming.
