Very true, Rave, very true. I can only base my opinions on what I've experienced... and the vast majority of it was, to me, horrifying. That in itself is based on my perceptions, and I know that my reaction isn't normal. So while perhaps I did misconstrue your meaning, I was trying to explain from my side why I used that word. _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

Some rap IS pretty horrifying, though, regardless of whether you're a Whitehouse-follower or a soulless eater of babies.
Still, despite the record sales of it, I don't think it's drastically affected crime. It just comes from a different culture, I suppose. _________________ Dubbed Pants by AsA, via the way of the electric pants. |

The problem, I think, is less about crime rates and more about the portrayal of that culture - rap is a huge stereotyping machine, and that's all some poeple have to base their opinions on. I'm not trying to identify causes - I know there's tons of factors as to why that is, and everyone has different opinions. _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

Well if you look at the point of view from the rap artists, they come from that type of communities where crimes are abound, where you wonder when you will live your next day, surrounded by drugs, hate and degradingness... so in that way I can see why they are spouting stuff anyone else can say is garbage. And even if they didn't live in that type of situation the moment they make their song, they can still carry beliefs from their culture and carry it into their music. In that way I cansee why you guys don't see eye to eye with these artists because you guys don't see eye to eye. Myself, I am shocked with what they are saying because I don't live where my life is in danger in any given moment. Or have society look down on me in general. I guess in that way, they "sing what you know".
Still, I would rather not fill my thoughts with all the negative messages in rap because it can make my whole day a lot worse. _________________ Yo.

There's a short documentary about rap called "Beyond beats and rhymes", by Byron Hurt. You can watch the whole thing on google video, it's just less than an hour long. Basically what it says is, the messages in rap music DON'T reflect the true reality. It's a front, a mask. At the same time, because it's so prevalent, the false messages permeate the public's thinking, and are in danger of becoming true. If role models are singing it, it must be true, right? If these rap artists started singing, "Yes, it's bad, but let's make it better" instead of "Yes, it's bad, and I'm going to kill everybody and rape people", it might actually get better.
That's my personal feeling, but I am idealistic, so yeah.
Watch the video, he says it much better than I did. _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

A lot of Old-Skool Rap was like that. But in recent years, the Hollywood Pimps have taken over the scene. _________________

Think of it this way: For every person buying some gangsta/pimp/bling cd, there's another two buying a fluffy, saccharine sweet Hannah Montanna or Jonas Brother's cd.
Wait, that actually doesn't make me feel much better. _________________ My printer thinks it's some kinda guitar hero because it won't stop jamming.

It'd be better if the rappers shaped up and the pop stars got a little more real, in my opinion. _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

Well they certainly don't reflect what we should strive for anyhow, just some skewed images that these rap artists have. It's about my needs and desires for instant gratifications and you should submit to my needs...yours don't matter over mine. This is general though, again.
Ya know, I would feel better if ya'll listened to some Beatles with me. Because, all you need is love! Da na na na na!
PCP: I'd actually rather listen the Jonas brothers over Hannah Montanna any day. Her songs irk me. I'm not really into girly music. And especially not Jessica Simpson. I feel like pulling some hair out listening to her, or Fergie. _________________ Yo.

I am by no means a fan of rap. Mainly because I like to be able to sing melodically to what I listen to, but I have heard a lot of rap with a posistive message. Maybe that's just because of the musical circles I move in but my favourite rap lyrics are from Alice Cooper ft. Xzibit.

what does 'ft.' mean? I've seen all over, and I don't know what it means. _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^
