@SS/Sunny: You and I are going to get along famously. Big Lebowski references for the win! And also, that death did tear me up. It was one of those "Man, what's it all for? All this crazy stuff happens in life, and only the really innocent and cool people have to die! ...man."

@Lope: Yeah, I'm reminded of why I stopped reading those novels...

And in regards to Mass Effect, the absolute most heart-wrenching moment in any video game I've ever played came from that game. I've never actually spent an hour on a pause menu, desperately scouring FAQs for SOME WAY to not have to make the "necessary loss" choice. I even considered, for a moment, putting the game away and never playing it again...

But yeah, Benezia's death scene was poignant, if a bit lame. It had depth, and emotion, but... I really expected her to give the ever-present "Turn my soul to the side of good for the last two minutes so I can give you the important plot point that'll save your bacon later." Of course, not having her do that makes the game original... It was just such a weak death. -_-

Since we're on a sci-fi kick, let me mention a Star Trek Movie.

Solely in Star Trek Movies:

Best: Spock in The Original Series. "I am...and shall always be...your friend." Maybe because it's from my youth, but it just doesn't get any more awesome.

Worst: Kirk's death in Generations. I had such high, high hopes that Kirk would get to live out the last of his days as some Admiral, gallivanting about the stars as was his destiny. I mean...you killed Kirk? Seriously? Captain James T. "Captain Awesome" Kirk? That's Star Trek blasphemy!

That reminds me, Tenshi.

In video-games, the saddest death scene I've ever seen was Miku's death in Fatal Frame 3. I did have to put the game down after the scene where you chase Miku and see her soul leave her body. I literally did it again only to find out there's no way to save her.


Now, Kei's death, I think I was so tired of playing with him that I think that I cheered the tatooed priestesses on a little, even though it was probably the most frightening way to die. Ever.

Haven't played that game, sounds like I may have to pick it up though.

For whatever reason, I love games that go against the grain and actually allow their characters to die.

Well, I'm not entirely sure how much you would enjoy it knowing which people die. It's also rather old for a video-game and hard to find. You could look up the videos on you-tube to see what I'm talking about, but the effect is better, as it usually is, if you get to know the characters throughout the game.

Take Kei, he's not a bad guy or anything, but in the game it seems his only purpose is to move furniture and pepper the game with annoyances in between the time you play as Rei or Miku. Miku, on the other hand, was the protagonist of the original Fatal Frame, and is the strongest character in the game if you don't count in specials.

The entire series is good enough to consider buying anyway. It's up there with Silent Hill as one of the scariest games around.

The retroactive deaths in Atonement got to me, and Roy's death from Order of the Stick was almost bizarre, and the death of the family of The Girl Who Was Forgotten By Absolutely Everyone very nearly made me depressed.

On a less fictional note, the Hiroshima Peace Museum was heart-wrenching, poignant and nearly made me cry.
