::poodles:: Back on topic, before this degenerates into...something other than the topic. And seriously, racial issues are such a hot topic that I doubt it would stay civil. Even sexuality is a hot topic nowadays, so really, let's just get back to the movie and not talk about our differences. And yes, this was written in lieu of a three paragraph reply on my own opinions. Just saying, let's not fight. Why can't we all just get along! >_< _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

You're assuming that they WILL get ugly. Sometimes it does, usually when bigoted idiots are involved. But there aren't any of those on these forums. (If any of you are lurking around out there, please, just ignore that Squee just called you a well-deserved name...) Squee hardly sees any uncivil commentary here.
Squee kinda echos Nem & JackAce here. Avoiding stereotypes tends to just reinforce 'em. Dealing with the stereotypes head-on is usually the best way.
But really, the real issue in Squee's mind is...The latest Disney Princess, idol of doll-playing girls everywhere...was going to be a chambermaid. Yeah, that's not very...girly. (Ooo...a stereotype!) Well, few of them would know what that means, but stil...Huh? Of course, there's Cinderella filling a similar role, but...
In the end, Squee's glad they changed it. |

I really didn't see much of a problem with her being a chambermaid to be honest. It's all a matter of perspective - if you feel that this was someone saying "this is how it should be" rather than "this is how it was and we're showing her rise above it" then of course you'll be offended by their choice for her occupation.
On a semi-related note, I get annoyed when they start talking about removing the racial slurs from Mark Twain's books, such as Huckleberry Finn. I'd recommend this article if you're at all interested in the issue of banning or altering historical fiction.
But simply put: you can't change history by pretending it didn't exist. _________________ Keeper of Nanashi's Vambraces and the Amethyst Trees.

I'm of the same mind, Lady Yates, and even worse, if you pretend it didn't exist, you can't learn any lessons from it. Frankly, it took a lot of personal and collective strength to overcome the prejudices and racial hatred of those times, and to pretend it never happened is an insult to those who overcame it. _________________ I love children...but I could never eat a whole one.

It's hard to tackle the issue of racism when it comes to Disney any way, I think, because from what I've heard Walt himself was the worst sort. Just looking at the company, it has come leaps and bounds. Still, the racism remains, and it's not going away the way it should. I guess it's just disheartening that it hasn't been erased yet.
But when I get too entrenched in the thoughts, I try my best just to take the movies as movies and not analyze it too much. Maybe a little bit irresponisble, but considering that hooplah can be made about almost anything, sometimes you gotta pick and choose.
Wow, that was one convoluted comment. Here's something simple. I am so insanely excited about this movie, I kiss Squee for bringing this teaser to me! _________________ If you're reading this, you haven't quite made it to the next post. |

Wow, can I just say EXCITED!!!!?!!
Also, Disney is also going to do Rapunzel! It will be CGI, BUT the animators are attempting to make the film resemble an oil painting. That's cool.

EDIT: Just read the wiki article for The Frog Princess and the "controversy".
""...and the character was also a chambermaid, an occupation some felt not in keeping with the image of a Disney Princess"
Um... Have they not heard of Cinderella? _________________ My printer thinks it's some kinda guitar hero because it won't stop jamming.

Exactly-the best part about most Disney princesses is how they begin in lowly circumstances but rise above them. The main trouble nowadays is that they tended to do so exclusively by marriage and by virtue of being royalty-but hey, it's a metaphor, right? And that's changed a lot in recent years. _________________ I love children...but I could never eat a whole one.
