Or said gas giant could eat it's moon(s) to acquire more raw material to create it's surface.

Afterall, Jupiter has enough to spare if he ever wanted to create life. Just needs to eat a few moons, tighten himself up, jump to the other side of the asteroid belt (perhaps eating a few asteroids along the way) and voila! Jupiter is ready to terraform himself. ^__^

Not really.

The combined mass of all of Jupiter's moons and the entire Asteroid Belt combined is only 0.02% of the current mass of Jupiter.

That's not even a snack, it's more like a single potato chip...

Also, if a gas giant were to contract his atmosphere onto him to transfrom himself to a solid, rocky planet, its surface gravity would be enormous and its remaining atmosphere super dense. Any creature living there would explode due to lack of external pressure upon arrival on Earthsong!

And thus we could introduce an amazing, exploding Gnome to the Earthsong-verse. Very Happy

The aforementioned theory was mostly a joke, though I still love the idea of a planet eating its moons. Perhaps I've watched too much Shadow Raiders, but it makes you wonder why (gravitational and chemical attractions aside) some planets like Jupiter have so many moons or why Saturn has rings.

If planets were conscious, what practical use would they have for moons and rings?

What practical use do you have for jewellery?

Lots of creatures living on Planets have a practical use for them, from counting time to being dependent on the change of the tides...

So if you were a Planet and planned to create life on your surface, having a moon isn't really such a bad idea.

Which reminds me:
Is it ever mentioned whether or not Earthsong has a moon?

Or pets?

Yes, but possibly not any more. Bel hid his core on it, but it's never mentioned whether or not he brought the moon crashing down with him when he descended to Earthsong. Most likely it's still in orbit, though.

Weaponry. ^___^

On topic...the question of a moon's place in the ES-verse still remains.
Since Bel hid his core there we can either assume a lack of sentience (as though the moon was an appliance/decor), a lack of loyalty (as a snack Razz) or a lack of understanding (as a pet).

Personally, I'm going with the moon being some sort of appliance for the planet due to a moon's effects on an M class planet. A moon must be really obedient to do its duty if it's sentient.

Can different races cross-breed?

From a purely scientific point of view, I should say they cannot (incompatible DNA).

However, given the highly supernatural origin of life in the universe, it can not be ruled out like that.

In any case, such a cross-breeding could only ever occur on Earthsong, and there is one particular issue with Earthsong's adopted children that might prevent it from ever happening:

Earthsong's guests don't age.
If you look at the character profiles on the main page, you'll find separate listings for Age of Body and Stay on Earthsong. And in some cases, the Stay on Earthsong is considerably longer than the Age of Body. That is only possible if Earthsong's guests are exempt from their natural ageing process.

But with biological ageing being disabled, how could a child ever be born and grow up?

I would go with (almost) certainly not, for the reasons mentioned above, and also for the simple reason that Lady has stated that whatever the state of affairs in-universe, she won't be addressing those issues in the comic.

That's fine, I just always like to dig around in the backstory and make sure the author knows what he or she is talking about and has all the details taken care of.

What do you mean it could only happen on Earthsong? Couldn't a race develop space travel, go to a different planet, and fall in love with another? Just because they all come to Earthsong for soulstone-removal doesn't mean in-universe they've never heard of anyone else.

Theoretically yes. If a species from one planet was genetically compatible with another from another planet and they met via artificial space travel, they would be able to interbreed. However, this assumes that artificial space travel between world is feasible in ESverse and not solely the province of Sidera and Planets.

In theory this would be possible.

But Earthsong is primarily a Fantasy story, so space travel by non-mythological means would be a highly unusual occurence.

Also, the Planets might actually try to actively prevent their Children from developing means of interstellar travel. After all, any habitable planets they are bound to find will most likely be sentient Planets, and they might not bee all too pleased about other Planets' children trespassing on their surfaces...

Biological aging is disabled because they have a soulstone, not because they're on Earthsong. If a child were to be born, of mixed alien heritage or not, they would age natually since they wouldn't have a soulstone.

But... as it's been said, this won't be an issue in the comic.

But it would be really interesting to hear the answer! And it would be useful for fan-fiction purposes...
