I came across a couple of nifty articles today in the local weekly paper, the Austin Chronicle, and thought I'd pass them on to all of you.
First up, a brief history of the avocado. Especially interesting for the biological details and Aztec vocabulary.
Then, in a more serious vein, a reflection on declining Chinese investment in American Treasury securities and what it may mean for global politics. A bit on the grim side, perhaps, but interesting. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Squee can't believe Squee used to hate avocados as a kid. Now, Squee adores them. Turkey avocado sandwiches? To die for!
Had a little rant about economics and the state of the U.S. atm, but deleted it due to being too much of a anti- diatribe. Suffice to say...China is smart, U.S. too apathetic, and too distracted right now to fix any real problems. |

One of the best things about living in Austin is the ready availability of fresh avocados. Mmm. I like BLT sandwiches with avocado in 'em. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Err, where?
... rapid visit to Google Maps ...
Ah. Maybe you were thinking of Houston, rather than Austin? Humble's apparently a suburb of Houston, about 170 miles from me. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Well, I mean, maybe you;ve traveled there, or been in that area.
Y'know, just 'cause I lived in Orlando that doesn't mean I never visited Pensacola... _________________ Hoffman icon courtesy of my very good friend, Isaymakebelieve, on LJ, check her out! http://community.livejournal.com/isaymakebelieve/

Well, that's not unreasonable. But I haven't. In fact, I don't have a car, or a bike, and so I rarely get far from my domicile. If the destination is more than a mile or two away, it's usually more trouble to get there than it's worth. _________________ Keeper of The Remnant Minuon (cognomen Lucy, the Eaten One) and the Emissary Caeli |

Stupid credit! The more I learn about how deep in the hole the US is when it comes to finances, the more paranoid I get about credit cards and debt in general-the fact that it's inescapable makes it even worse. Makes me want to just dig a hole and live there. _________________ I love children...but I could never eat a whole one.

Only inescapable debt is a mortgage (if it's not, give Squee some of that cash, plzkthnx). It's honestly not that hard to live debt-free...unless you really wanna live an expensive lifestyle that requires large amounts of debt. It's called living with your means, and it's a great way to do it. Also, credit cards aren't bad at all as long as you're not leaving payments around. Just be smart, that's all there is to debt. |

My Econ teacher liked to tell us how he bought his house with a check. Flat out, no credit, full price right up front. The jerk. _________________ ...In accordance with the prophesy.
